C. Yesterday morning we went to Winchester. Virginia from Washington, which is second oldest city in Virginia. This was Sheridan's headquarters during the fall and winter of 1864-0'Alas, the headquarters of General Thomas J. Jackson (Stonewall) in 1801. There is an old fort called Fort Loudown right in the city of Winchester which was built by George to proWashington in 1750-5tect the people of Winchester from the French and Indians. It was necessary in the event of a siege, to have a water supply with in the one-hal- f acre fortification. A 103 foot well was sunk, mostly through solid limestone. The work was tedious, since only hand diiRs and black powder was in use. For years the water was drawn with windlass, cable, and wooden bucket. The garrison comprised 450 men and the fort cost $30,000. About 1S30 an academy was established on the site of Fort Loudown and since then the building has been used almost continuously for educational purposes. Another interesting place is a house where during the Civil war a cannon ball passed entirely thru the house. There is a black spot painted on the north wall showing where the ball entered. The ball in the itself is still embedded south wall. The place is called Cannon Ball House. In a five-acr- e cemetery named for Stonewall Jackson lie the remains of nearly 3,000 Civil war soldiers from the 11 Confederate states. Maryland, Georgia. Florida Lonisana and Tennessee. The cemetery was dedicated on October ISOfi, and General Turner Asbby, and his broker Captain Richard Asbby are buried here. The tall shaft in the cemetery is the monument to the 829 Confederate unknown dead. CORA E. CARLTON ' 11 '" ,i i T Every time clothes are cleaned their freshness and color are renewal.
