It is currently evident that the western states are much disappointed over the failure of the Democratic National Platform to say anything about silver and definitely rejected any indorsement of a continuation of the tariff or copper. Failure to mention silver, argued the delegates from western states, amounted to repudiation of the platform of 1932, and also the sil- ver program adopted by Congress and now in effect. The Arizona delegation strongly urged a 10 per cent import duty on copper, but failed to find many supporters. It is evident that the present tariff of 4 cents per pound is considered adequate, particularly in view of the fact that the domestic market has, at no time since the tax was enacted, taken advantage of more than a fraction of the full protection offered.
