LEE R. PETTEY Mayor V Feedback Dear Red: Find enclosed check for $15.00 for one year subscription for the Beaver County News. I always enjoy the news from my home town. Sincerely, Theone Mosher that it is absolutely necessary that the persons clothing, bedding and any towels or other objects that they used be washed In hot water on a regular wash cycle. If washing Is not possible, dry cleaning can be substituted. Additionally, 20-minutes In a hot dryer will Inevitably kill the lice. If people wish any further Information on head lice I would suggest that they contact their physician or the County HealthAgency. Sincerely, 30 Dear Red, It has come to my attention that a number of the people in Milford are uncertain about the problems associated with head lice In the com -m unity. I thought that maybe a letter would be a good way to help alleviate a lot of the questions and anxieties that have seemed to have been produced. First of all, people shouldnt panic, there are three or four million people in the United States that get head lice every year. Head lice are very easy to control, in fact probably easier than common dandruff if they are detected and treated. They are directly transmitted from one person to another by personal contact, or more commonly by the use of the same article of clothing, towel, combs or brushes. They can be spread through bedding, pillows or other similar articles of upholstery. Head lice can usually by detected by examining the hair carefully, right at the base you may sometimes see a small whitish, oval speck attached to the hair shaft approximately 18 to 14 inch from The lice themselves the skin. are very small, approximately 11 6th In size, gray and very difficult to see. Occaslanally they can be combed out of the hair with a fine tooothed comb and exa- -. mined. It should be noted that the lice cannot be spread through swimming, or by just being in the same room. Although they are most commonly found among school age children, particularly in the younger grades, the condition does not favor ic any particular race, or group. It is not symptomatic of any lack of cleanliness or personal hygelne. If a person suspects they might have head lice they should have their hair examined to look for tell-ta- le In the event signs of the lice. that they do appear to have it, all that is needed Is a shampooing with any of two or three different anti -- lice medications that are available over the counter at most any pharmacy. Usually a ten minute soak in the liquid, followed by a careful shampooing of the hair will remove all living lice and eggs from the scalp. It should be note MIKE SYMOND MD.
