Milford Valley Memorial Hospital is not exempt. The fact that the doors stay open Is a miracle of very good management. At this point our local hospital Is one of few if not the only facility of it's kind in this state that Is not subsidized by public funding of some V V Beaver County News JTrai ni Two separate Incidents during last week brought attention to the fact that a hospital in our community is an asset. Life can in deed be preserved by a facility ' and staff that Is prepared. The "Miracle" of saving a life is not a momentary act. It is the result of months and years of preparation and a state of constant readiness. This state of constant readiness has many aspects. Most visible is the skills of the people involved in the life saving procedure itself. Years of training and practice are required to react at the moment a life hangs in the balance. Less visible is the vital equipment and medications needed to assist the skilled team in their efforts. These must be in constant readiness, always in working order and up to date. Neither the personnel nor the essential equipment can be assembled after the need arises. In the urban communities pitals are able to fine tune special teams for every possible calamity that can befall a human. Burn centers, heart care units, surgical teams and trauma centers are a boon to the sick and injured. We are all grateful for them. But if you choose the make your home away from the city, must you sacrifice expert medical attention when you need it. The answer Is no. Immediate emergency needs can be met by a rural community whocares enough to maintain the facility and staff to do it. This caring can not be limited to cheering the success of one miraculous life saving effort. It must be a constant support system, with every citizen doing their share. Actually there would be no hospital in this area without the enormous citizen effort made over 20 years ago to build the building. It Is human to take for granted that which runs smoothly. It is probably just as human to be critical when things go wrong. During the past 2 years the hospital employees have subsidized the hospital operation by forfeiting their retirement plan, giving up 50 of their health insurance benefit, cut working hours and most recently taken 10 wage cuts. Mean while services continue to be offered at the same high standard as always. Wage scales have been under discussion in the community. Here are a few facts you might like to know. Registered nurses at MVMH start at a lower salary than the high school graduate who hires out to Utah Power & Light or UPRR. A person without special education can earn more on road construction than working and holidays nights, week-end- s, as a member of a hospital staff, in any position. Information about pay scales Is available at the hospital administrative level to anyone interested in correct information. Unity is important in the survival of any public service.
