He and his brother Dr. Charles Smith were the surgeon's who operated on my back some years ago. One of Dr. Paul's six daughters Leanna wrote this poem which was on the program of the Memorial Service. MY FATHER'S SHOES Two shoes lay on the floor. I looked as I walked by, And then I looked again And pondered with a sigh. They were my father's shoes. In them he'd worked through life And sought to love and care, Through peace as well as strife. The God he loved and served Gave him the shoes he wore, Though tattered, frayed, and torn, He never asked for more. If I could wear those shoes, How honored I would be. To live and die, like him Would mean so much to me. Leanne Smith The Utah Energy Office Weatherl-zatio- n Assistance Program will weatherlze Its 22,000th home this month. The purpose of the program Is to reduce energy consumption and energy costs of Utah's low income population. Typical weatherlzation measures Include weatherstripping, setback Insulation, caulking, thermostats and furnace efficiency modifications. The program operates statewide. Weatherlzation measures are Installed by local field crews and private contractors under the direction of the Utah Energy Office. Funding for the program is from the U.S. Department of Energy and Exxon oil overcharge funds. In Utah, substantial changes have been made in the operation of weatherlzation program operation. Today, field crews are weatherlzation specialists trained in residential energy conservation technology. As a result, energy use in weatherlzed homes is expected to be cut by 20 percent or state-of-the-- greater. . Mike Johnson, Utah Energy Office Weatherlzation Field Manager notes, "All weatherlzation field inspectors are certified energy auditors who have passed a national audit course and examination. They conduct detailed residential energy audits on each home so that the $1,600 maximum allowed per home is used most Field crews use blower doors to identify areas of infiltration. Infrared thermography is also used to ensure that all structural areas with heat loss are weatherlzed. Field crews only Install end complete energy measures that achieve a payback In seven years or less. Barnum's tation, "There's a sucker born every minute" was probably a conservative estimate. This column is byno means inclusive of all the health fraud in the U.S., but it is a sampling of some of the worst brought to the attention of the National Council Against Health Fraud. I truly believe if you advertised seminars entitled "Learn to Fly by Flapping Your Arms," quite a few people would show up. If you charged $150 for the seminars, even more people would show up. Am I being silly? My idea is only slightly more off the wall than "Breatharlanism" the Idea that you could live by air alone. Wiley Brooks promoted just such nonsense in the early 1980's when he appeared on the television show "That's Incredible." What is really incredible Is that he was getting $500 a head for his seminars before his hoax was exposed in March 1983. An L.A. Times reporter caught Brooks eating. As recently as May of this year, breatharlanism seminars were being offered in Hawaii. back to flapping your Getting arms-Rob- ert Kroprinski successfully sued a transcendental meditation school In Iowa for $138,000. The suit charged that the school 'was liable for psychological and emotional damage to Kroprinski during his 11 -- year association with the school. The cause of his distress was that the school promised Kroprinski that he would learn to levitate. However, he was never able to get off the ground. If you believe you can fly, you'll probably also believe that you can lose weight while you sleep with "Dream Away" diet pills. Unfortunately, this claim was too far out even for California where the district attorney fined the promoters $162,000 for false advertising. Although the previous examples of quackery can be laughed at, there is a darker side to quackery. Quacks rush In to reap profit from peoples' tragedy. For example, quack cancer cures are rampant. One cancer cure quack was caught promoting blood crisscrossing to cure cancer. He removed blood from the right side of the body and injected it into the left side. As you might expect, equally quacks are moving into the business of curing AIDS (Acquired Immune DeficiencySyndrom). Black heartless market drugs, Mexican clinics, psychological treatments and good old vitamin C .are all being foisted upon a panicky public. 538-54- or 10 f Lazy m m v wrw OUR CLASSIFIED ADS eye HAVE WHAT YOU WANT! clinic They're Full of SUPER BUYS Se Read Them And You'll The AMBLYOPIA CLINIC will be held In Beaver County, September It is important 17th and 18th. that all three, four and five year old preschool children participate in this free visual screening.
