In an otherwise routine meeting, Mayor Young and the City Council reinstated Cliff Cook, who was suspended suspend-ed on September 3rd from his duties as Chief of Police and City Foreman, to City Foreman, at his present salary sal-ary of $570 pet; month. They also authorized Mayor May-or Young to hire another full-time police officer. The hang-up came when Jimenez made the motion to authorize the Mayor to hire another full-time police officer. Councilwoman Whittaker amended the motion to read, subject to the approval of the Council. Argument ensued over whether this amendment would handicap the Mayor in locating a qualified man. Editor Wilson pointed out that the Council held the voting vot-ing power to reverse any deal made by the Mayor at any time, and so the amendment amend-ment was not needed. On this basis, and the fact that the rehiring of Cook constituted Just a Job change, with no Increase in salary, Swain seconded Jimenez's motion. Four councllmen voted for, with Dalton abstaining. ab-staining. In other action the Council adopted Ordinance 28, changing the curfew from 10 p.m. to midnight on Fridays Fri-days and Saturdays.
