Show FINAL EFFORT FOR COUNTY HOSPITAL FAILS A special meeting was held in Minersville Monday evening as a "final effort" to explore possibility of constructing p county hospital in Beaver County, instead of two hospitals hospit-als to serve the two areas. The meeting was called at the request of J. Croxford of Salt Lake, acting director of the State Department of Health and other officials attending were Lew Collanda, regional director of the U S Publiq Health Service; Lincoln Ure of the Lincoln Ure Brokerage Co., and Continental Bank officials. It was the purpose of asking the two groups to meet togeth-, er, Mr. Croxford said, in hopes that the bonds of Service Area No. 2 (Milford - Minersville) could be refunded, the two, areas "start over" and issue bonds as a county area, to construct con-struct one hospital. Milford delegates to the meeting were luke-warm, and the Beaver delegates were ice cold. Allen Reynplds, spokesman for the Beaver group, stating that the "agriculture and high way revenue in Beaver is a more stable economy than th? uncertainty of railroading after the U S Supreme Court 'feath-erbedding' 'feath-erbedding' decision; the Beaver, area has the greatest number of people," advised the Salt Lake group that "we can smile at the situation" and inferred Continued on Back Page Mrs. Sophia Johnson has been released from the Beaver County Hospital and is now recuperating re-cuperating from a major operation oper-ation at the home of Miss So-phronia So-phronia Hawley. The visiors suggested that in view of a Utah Supreme Court decision declaring unconstitu tional a similar service are for construction of an auditorium there is a "cloud" on the- validity valid-ity of hospital servcie areas. They suggested the two service areas join in financing a test case to determine legality of hospital service areas. Neither Beaver nor Milford was agreeable, agree-able, and Mr. Reynolds advised that in conversation with Chief Justice Henroid, the jurist advised ad-vised Mr. Reynolds that the Supreme Court "has no intention inten-tion of doing this thing" to small hospitals, and that the Beaver Service Area would not participate partici-pate . . . "We're trying something some-thing else. We won't disclose our methods at this time." Dr. Eugene Davie of Milford suggested a county hospital to be built near the John Bailey home west of Minersville, and said "as a doctor" he wouldn't mind driving out there to visit his patients. Dr. Symond pointed out that he had known instances in which three minutes meant the difference between saving r; patient and losing him; doctors are available in Milford in a matter of minutes, 24 hours a day; a suorce of major support for the Mi ford hospital is the medical and surgical revenue from Union Pacific Railroad employees hospital insurance and many of those railroaders had indicated that if there is no hospital in Milford they will go to Salt Lake, Las Vegas or Los Angeles for surgery. Mr. Croxford pointed out that with the "cloud" over validity val-idity of service area bonds, it was doubtful if Beaver could sell their bonds, should the bond election carry, but with Milford's bonds having been approved ap-proved and sold before the Supreme Su-preme Court decision, they probably would be declared valid. . The Beaver representatives also turned down a suggestion that a county hospital be built in Milford, with a nursing home and clinic in Beaver. The meeting adjourned with representatives of both service areas refusing to compromise |
