Photo by Morris The high cost of health care across the nation has been a popular subject for the news media during recent years and indeed health care costs have escalated at an alarming rate. There are a number of contributors to these costs: Among them are new scientific developments, li' the mechanical heart, organ systems for maintaining transplants, kidney dialisis and life breathing and heart beat on patients ' o would otherwise die. Specialized care provided by highly skilled professionals has its price but saves lives and improves the quality of life for many. When a so called miracle drug is prescribed for your acute infection you not only buy the medication, but pay a share of the research costs that brought the drug into existance. In other words we have available and expect the best possible health care in history, but the technology doesnt come cheap. It seems to me one serious area of the rising cost of care has not been adequately evaluated by the media. This is the cost inflicted on health care institutions by government regulations mostly the rules and regulations applied to facilities caring for patients covered The required volumes of paperwork mount annuaUy by Medicare. requiring more and more of the time of hospital staff in order to meet the demands of regulations implemented by survey teams who visit every facility regularly ai what oust be an enormous cost to the tax payer. The Milford Hospital has recently hosted a survey team. As a matter of interest we estimated the cost of keeping patient care records designed specifically to meet federal and state regulations. We estimated this cost at $600.00 annually. Enough to buy a rather fancy wheel chair. Results of the survey will now escalate this cost again to meet additional expectations of the survey teams. And the team will return in three months to see that we are doing this. At this point we estimate that the cost of this record keeping will double and will benefit the patient not one iota. The State Health Department offered to send a team to provide inservices to teach us how to do this paperwork. We turned them down, explaining we did not wish to spend the hospital funds or the tax payers money in this manner. But dont despair folks. Good patient care will still be our major thrust! The nonsense paper work is a nuisance that we will have to live with until better government regulations can be written. And we are bringing all the pressure to bare that we can for this by writing our Congressmen. On the brighter side. There are still plenty of people who care about our patients. As I write this column the Second Ward Relief Society Ladies are here with a program of cheer and treats for the The Relief Societies of both wards have been generous patients. with their time and talents on behalf of our patients. Also this week Lucille Goff contributed a shawl and a lap robe, Diane McCulley. two pair of the knit slippers we find so helpful. Alice Elmer came to celebrate the birthday of a patient with no local family, bringing gifts and love. All of this proving that people are still more important than Government Rules and Regulations. - o) LlVU Liva 6 French Fried Potatoes Chilled Fruit Cud Milk (f A CART0S1 REBATE: When you buy an Armstrong ceiling and Armstrong installation material.
