Sure is a Bice setting for a picnic. Is tt so hard to pick up the garbage after yourself instead of leaving tt for others to enjoy? W have lived here all our lives, and always remember Mllford as being such a nice and cute little town. We dont need prosperity to keep our town clean, we need pride and a little elbow grease won't hurt. It's up to all of us to do our part, and yes that means you the Individual, civic groups, businesses and school. Seems like all we heir anymore Is that Mllford is dying. Well, ifthat's our attitude, then yes tt probably will. Couldn't we all give Mllford the chance tt deserves? We all want more for Mllford, wouldn't that be a start? Let's all do our part In cleaning up this town and give people a reason to want to live here. Thanks for hearing us out. We love this little town and we would like to live here the rest of our lives. Concerned Citizens et, San $ititico Valley Mews Barbara Mayer AM EARLY HISTORY OF MILFORD By GEORGE A. HORTON, JR. "The first known visit to th Indians In tills area by whit nan had 29th. However, Fray SUvestre Velez da Escaiante has become the most famous member of the expedition, and tt was to him that the party often looked for Its real leadership. Escaiante had agitated for such a trip for several years. He thought that the trip would give him a chance to bring the message of Christ to the Yuta Indians who were a more peaceful people than the Apaches. Leaving Santa Fe, they traveled north for about six weeks, turned west Into what is now Utah and by September 24, they were camped on the shores of Utah Lake. They were very Impressed with the beauand the extremely tiful valley friendly reception given them by the Indians. They called the lake Tim -panogo after the Indians, many of whom accepted their preaching and begged for their hasty return." come just after the end of the American Revolution. The journey started with ten Spaniards only a few weeks after the colonies had declared their independence in July of 1776. The Mllford Valley, Indeed, possibly the site of Mllford Itself, was the place where the single roost Important decision of the Journey was made. At that time, Spain was concerned about the land she laid claim to which extended Into the area covered by the present states of New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, and Nevada. The proposed Journey would help to strengthen the Spanish claims to this vast territory. The primary purpose was to find a more northernly route to Monterey, and the Catholic missions of upper California which would bypass the undesirable problems of fording the Colorado River, crossingthe rugged Grand Canyon, surviving the almost formidable deserts, and avoiding the bloodthirsty Apaches. Both the Spanish Government and the Catholic Church were interested In the venture. The government wanted to hold the coast ports for their ships to carry on a lucrative trade with the Philippine Islands, and the church wanted closer contact between their Santa Fe headquarters and the fast growing missions of California. Dear John, You wanted to hear about peoples complaints, well, we have a few for you. What's happened to civic pride? As we look at our town, you can see that some people have no pride in their homes and yards. We see more elderly with neat and tidy yards (and most of them have to pay someone to do the work) than the young people of Mllford who are more than capable to keep their homes and yards looking nice. Vacant lots should be expected to keep weeds cut (to prevent fires). We also feel that one mans treasures are one town eyesore. If they must keep their treasures, they should have to build a fence around tt. There are so many empty homes in Mllford which the owners leave The homes are being unkempt. vandalized, the yards are deteriorating the, owners leave our town, but we still get to look at their home sweet horn el We feel owners should be responsible for property upkeep or be fined. What's the first thing that impresses you when you arrive inMil-forIs it the lovely comdemned pink, apartments, or is it that whole block? Businesses should be expected to keep sidewalks and outside appearances neat. The city used to sweep the streets all the time, what happened? Has our city grown so much that our city employees are unable to help with cleanliness of our town? reported that the U.S.B.A. Convention in Salt Lake City was very worthwhile this year and presented Items he received while attending mini -- workshops that may be of interest to the district. Normally a letter of this length would be edited for content but this one brings out some very vital points, and each one Is a concern of all of member that without water the weeds become very dry and a fire can start from even a tiny piece of glass catching the suns rays just right. No one cares if the weeds burn, but what about the homes next door? Who will be held responsible for the loss of a home because of neglect? The vacant homes and buildings are not only an eyesore because of neglect and vandalism but are real flretraps and a hazard to the safety and welfare of our children. Must it take a real tragedy to happen before city officials realize their responsibility? I beg the cltycoun-c- ll to check their ordinances for this problem and if they dont have one, write one now and make sure it is enforced before it is too late. Many of you have young children yourselves. Mainstreet has always been a problem as to building uniformity and attractiveness. This is an ongoing problem for the Mllford Business Association.
