Conditions in northern Utah were relatively mild through the first week in November. This was followed by a hard freeze and record snowfalls which moved most birds out of the area in short order. There was some thawing activity in late December, but most birds had moved on. Many hunters did well this yeat despite the adverse conditions.' Goose hunting success was good,1 and duck hunters who adapted to conditions had a fair season. MAIN STREET 179 No. 300 W. Beave-COUNT- Waterfowl hunters in Utah saw fewer birds than normal this year, primarily as a result of reduced populations. As many hunters are aware, breeding populations In some of the key production areas of Canada and the northern United States are at very low levels. Mallard and pintail numbers In particular are at an all time low level. At the same time, the flooding of the Great Salt Lake has destroyed much of the wetland habitat in northern Utah. This has had an adverse effect on local production and on migration through the area. With reduced habitat available and increased pressure on the remaining habitat, most birds are not staying in Utah nearly as long as they did before the flooding. This has been especially true for swans in the last two or three years. Swans are moving through Utah much more quickly than before. As a result, peak swan numbers are occurring In late October and early November. Many swan hunters are use to pre -- flood conditions and don't even start hunting until lateNovem -- ber.
