The Division of Alocohol and Drugs in Utah says that alcohol is the most commonly used DOWN drug in America. It is used by more people than even tobacco. Alcohol causes more addiction, death and other detrimental states of body and mind than all other Tfrugs combined. Addiction to alcohol, known as alcoholism, effects an estimated ten millions Americans. Somewhere between eight -- ten percent of all people who drink become addicted to this drug. The reasons are many: to escape problems, one or both parents were alcoholics, or drinking is seen as a solution to everything, a "need" to become addicted that is not totally understood by researchers, or maybe just a biochemical tendency a person is born with. Many causes of alcoholism are not known for certain. Most alcoholics see their addiction as a "disease" which in this case means they feel they are allergic to alcohol and can't resist drinkine to excess without help. Most people who drink can choose to stop after one drink. Most alcoholics can not stop, and may go on for hors or uneitl they run out of money or pass out. Alcoholics may be young or old, rich or poor, men and women. Historically, alcohol has sometimes played a useful role. It was mixed with opium to become part of the first anesthetics used centureies ago by the Chinese. Before the days of sedatives and tranquilizers, alcohol was often prescribed by doctors for insomnia and nervousness. Alcohol if taken in quantities high enough to get drunk, takes many important vitamins and minerals from the body. Even occasional drinkers should watch their diet, being sure to eat a balanced meal with plenty of vitiamins A, C and B complex. Birth defects can occur among women who drink during pregnancy. As little as three drinks or three beers a day can be harmful during pregnancy. About 1,000 persons per year die from alcohol overdoses. Alcohol is especially dangerous combined with drugs. Drinking and driving is the leading cause of major traffic accidents. When everything is added up about 250,000 people a year die in this country from some sort of alcohol related cause. This includes traffic accidents, suicide, shootings, stabbings, overdoses, and death due to liver disease caused by drinking. Obviosly everyone has access to alcohol sooner or later in life. Drinking will continue as long as there is people. The best idea, if one chooses to drink, is to use alcohol responsible. Alcoholic beverages should never be "pushed" on people at parties. Some people feel better not drinking at all. Offering to drive others home when they are drunk Is doing them a favor. If food is In the stomach before hand, it helps people handle liquor better. w'L While graduated from Payson High and L.D.S. Seminary in 1957. He joined the UJS.
