Show COMMISSIONERS STUDY DILEMMA OF COURTHOUSE The Beaver County Commissioners Commis-sioners are planning a study of the feasibility of repairing and rebuilding the old historical landmark, Beaver County Courthouse or to tear it down and build another. Commissioners Monday ordered or-dered a three-pronged study and a special preference election elec-tion on the future of the build- lily ueiuie Illdtvillg tx unai uc- cisicn. The study and vote were agreed on after an appeal by Melbin Smith, state preservation preserva-tion officer, to preserve the building. The building was started in the late 1870s, but not completed com-pleted until June, 1882. It is now listed on the national register reg-ister or historical sites, but the building physically is in. poor condition. Commissioners ordered the study to be completed in 30 days, to: Determine how structurally structural-ly sound the building is. Estimate the cost of fixing tht! building. Cost of new building and cost of tearing present building down. The county is now in bad need of new jail facilities, but has been unable to find suitable property in Beaver to build on, Plans for the jail would in-r elude property for a new courthouse court-house in the future. Other business included, ou-thorizing ou-thorizing Mr. Rowley, Sheriff Tait and County Attorney John Christensen to draw up plans for a new jail. Agreed to approve an easement to the Minersville Reservoir and Irrigation Company Com-pany for construction of a new irrigation system and pipe line. The budget was increased by $8,058.00. The Janitor $185.00, Clerk $1,578.00, Attorney $610.00, Recorder $1,225.00, the Sheriff $610.00, Treasurer $1,125.00, and Assessor Assess-or $1,125.00. The Justice of the Peace budget was increased -$4,000.00, of which $1,697.86 was deducted from the Sheriff's Liquor Law account, for a total to-tal budge increase of $1,600.00. The increases, effective Mar. 1, 1971 are for salaries and benefits, except for the J.P. budget which covers the hiring of an Alcholic Probation work-ei. |
