Department of Labor, a table given in the report shows sugar has contributed less to the high cost of living than eight other food products, the prices of which show the least increase of all commodities commodi-ties which are now helping to swell the average food bill. J. S. Critehlow, Gen. Sales Manager May 28th, 1917 TO THE TRADE: Due to various causes, among which might be mentioned: First: the scarcity of oil; Second: the lack of boats by which coal may be imported; Third, the extraordinary increase in the demand from large consumers, such as smelters, mining companies, manufacturing companies com-panies and sugar plants, and Fourth, the shortage of labor, the producing coal companies find themselves unable to keep pace with the situation. With this in mind, we think it timely to ask each retailor to, as much as possible, conserve his coal supply. We also advocate j co-operation with the railroad companies, the operating heads of i which are working as an advisory committee with the Interstate Commerce Commission in the handling of equipment; and to see j that cars are unloaded promptly, that they arc not misused, and to expedite the return of empties to the mines for reloading. WE ALSO THINK THAT IT IS ADVISABLE FOR EACH RETAILER RE-TAILER TO URGE UPON HIS CUSTOMERS THE NECESSITY OF THE STRICTEST ECONOMY IN THEIR COAL USAGE. ASKING THEM IF POSSIBLE TO USE ONE BUCKETFUL WHERE THEY ORDINARILY USED TWO. We believe that concerted action along these lines by all those mentioned will have a material effect in relieving the situation during dur-ing the coming fall and winter At the present time there is no doubt but that the demand for conl far exceeds the possible supply. We hope you will give this matter serious and earnest consideration. consid-eration. Very truly yours. UNITED STATES FUEL COMPANY. J. S. Critehlow. Gen. Sales Manager.
