Every year at their annual meeting, which was held at the Department of Agriculture & Good in Salt Lake City on January 29, 1998, the SWCS recognizes a farmer/rancher who is doing an outstanding job in operating and managing their farm and serves as a good example of one using their natural resources within their capability for sustained use. c Arlan and his family manage a hay cubing operation on close to 1,000 acres. He has also been involved with the Twin M Soil Conservation Last summer, Arlan demonstrated to local land owners and resource agency people the use of water mark soil moisture meters on his farm during a soil conservation district tour, and how to utilize them as a tool for farmers to help maintain sound water conservation practices in the district. Arlan also has been very active on the Twin M Soil Conservation District board and has promoted the Agriculture Resource Development Loan (ARDL) program to district cooperators and the benefits of utilizing the program on their farms and ranches. He has always been an active supervisor and has practiced what he has preached on the land. Without exception, all Beaver County incumbents working in the courthouse, filed for re-election Monday. All said they care about their jobs and want the voters to know it. Assessor Max Limb, who has been in office since 1971, referred voters, Kanell will be on the ballot for retention.....a yes or no vote. Retention vote also applies to each of the three precinct justices: Shad Bradshaw, Beaver; Jetta Davie, Minersville; Normand Thompson, Milford. Unlike the county attorney’s position, other candidates can not file in opposition to the justices. If they are voted out of office, it is up to the county commission to appoint a replacement. LeeAnn Joseph, the youngest in the courthouse group....and the only woman, filed for her second term in office. Paul Barton, temporarily suffering from the effects of “jogging and a healthy lifestyle” stopped by the office to file on his way home from a doctor’s appointment. Barton has been the Clerk/Auditor since 1982. Bruce Brown, who has never had an opponent on the ballot in six previous elections, wants another term. Sheriff Ken Yardley also filed. Incumbent School Board members Patricia Rimpau (Precinct 4) and Norman Lamb (Precinct 5) have not yet officially declared their intent. Both have indicated that health conditions are a concern. Susan Craw has filed as a contender for Precinct 4. Only one candidate, Dick Pryor, filed for a commission seat on Monday. Commissioner Ross Marshall, who has been plagued with failing health for some time, says he will not seek another term in office. The other incumbent who’s term expires this year, Richard Rollins, said he plans to wait until the last minute.....March 17th at 4:59 P.M...... to see who else throws their hat in the ring before he decides whether or not to file. , yy ; marriage licenses, passports and Bradshaw, and Sara McDermott. Students Qualify For State Level Geography Bee potatoes, salt, milk and enough flour Candidates File Harly to himself as the “oldest assessor in years in the state.” He has had an opponent in every race. “Never had a free one.” County Attorney Leo Kanell paid his fee.....it costs more to file for the attorney’s position that any of the other offices. Why? His salary is higher. Kanell may have a counterpart on the ballot this year. Jon Christiansen is attempting to file for the position. Requirements for filing include being a licensed attorney and member in good standing of the Utah State Bar at the time of filing. Christiansen is still in law school and will not take his bar exams until July. He contends that he will meet the requirements by election day, and has entered a petition for a ruling from the © district court judge. Whether or not Christiansen appears on the ballot, Kanell does not have a free ride. If no choice of candidates is presented to ry property. applying change will make it very handy for those of us who at one time or another must attend to these business matters. I for one am very pleased. I am not sure how many Scandinavians there are in this area but it wouldn't have been winter in our house without lefse. It's an ethnic delicacy made in the fall when it starts to get cold. It's made of District for the past 11 years, and is also active on several other boards in the community. tt, The people of Milford will be pleased to be informed that our Justice Court system in Milford will be handling many more functions of business than we have had up to now. For 10 years our Justice Court clerk has been Gail Young. Our presiding judge is Normand Thompson. Former duties for the court have mainly been handling small claims and citations. The month of February brought hearts and lots of gifts for ESA’s members at their meeting held at the home of Carla Fowles. We met early at the telephone office down town to learn about how our telephone system runs, everyone learned a lot. We then went to Carla’s were we finished the rest of our meeting. A fashion and bridal show will be held this month on the 23rd. Booths will be set up for flowers, invitations, photography, jewelry, catering, clothing.... everything that goes along with a wedding. The junior and senior girls will be modeling their prom dresses. The little girls from Dance Unlimited will perform. Everyone please come out and see the beautiful dresses. A lovely dessert was served and everyone loved their valentines. i ESA Sorority would like to welcome its new members for this year; Dolly Turner, Kathy Dotson, Tatia — to make a dough then rolled out flat and quite thin. The wood stove was fired just right so the lefse would brown with the right amount of spots. The turning and lifting them with out making any holes was an art in itself. In later years we purchased an electric lefse baker so we could control the heat and everything became much easier. After baking they are cooled on a plate. The lefse are lathered with butter or sugar or both and rolled up ready to eat. I guess with all that butter and sugar anything would taste good. I would say they are same as tortillas, only made with potatoes. How about the lutefisk that goes with lefse? That's another column! More reminisces later. I want to send many happy thoughts to Raul and June Pearson with wishes that you'll feel better everyday. By the way........ Success is speaking words of praise .... in cheering other people's ways in doing just the best you can .... with every task and every plan. /s/ Jewell Dahl Week in Review Recharge the Aquifer: A\\ of that snow in the mountains is going to melt.
