Parker Jet Propulsion Laboratory You might say Dr. Tim Parker put Milford on the map ... ..... the map of Mars, that is. As a scientist with the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, California, he is involved in the mapping process of Mars. Geologic mappers working on areas of scientific interest for the United States Geological Survey's Mars mapping program have the opportunity to suggest place names in areas where few names a previously available. Because the program is working at scales that are larger than previous mapping projects allowed, there are large regions with few place names. Such was the case when Parker began mapping four quadrangles in the southern Argyre basin on Mars. The International Astronomical Union maintains lists and locations of place names on planets and their natural satellites. The rules for naming craters on Mars require that craters less than 100 kilometers in diameter be named for Earth towns and cities with populations less than 100,000. Those larger than 100 kilometers are CA 91109, attention: Dr. Robert Anderson. Names must be received by August 1,.1996.
