Jewel Dahl (dountfl Hfeftitor TBS i.-- .i DO YOU HA VE TIPS ON CHRISTMAS TREE SELECTION AND CARE? DECEMBER 4, 1997 if i Jy shop Answer by: Michael Kuhns, Utah State University Extension Forestry Specialist Freshness and moistness are the keys to having a Christmas tree' that doesn't droop before the holidays are over. Consider these tips for tree selection and care once you bring it home. Buy a fresh tree. Trees shipped into Christmas tree lots from out of state may be fresh, but they " can-als- o be old and dried out. Check the tree carefully before making a purchase. The best way to ensure freshness is to buy from a local grower or : from a retailer you know and trust. To check for freshness, gently pull on several needles. If some come off, the tree may not be fresh. Also check for falling needles by lifting the tree and striking the bottom on the ground. You can also pull off a few needles and break them to see if they are moist and ' fragrant. Do not worry about unattached needles that accumulate inside the crown. They do not indicate a poor tree and can easily be removed. Care for the tree properly before bringing it in the house. Cut a thin piece from the bottom to open the tree's vessels and store it outside in water until you are ready to decorate it. Keep it away from sun and wind so it does not dry out. When you are ready to bring the tree in, cut the bottom again if it has been stored outside for more than a few days. Keep the tree watered. The tree should be placed in a sturdy stand that holds at least one gallon of water. A fresh tree can lose that much or more water a day, so check the water level daily. Also be sure to place the tree away from heat sources to prevent drying. Once needles dry out, they do not easily remoisten, even when the tree is placed in water. A fresh tree that is watered daily can stay moist and safe for several weeks. If a tree is displayed in a public building, however, it should be displayed for no more than about 15 days and should be treated with a fire retardant. Be sure to check w ith local fire officials to make sure you are displaying the tree according to fire code for a The computer system. for..all...Milford Healthcare Services will be down Friday, Valley December 5th to Sunday, December 7th. "We in agriculture need to not just be familiar with words such as TMDLs," he said, "but we need to be on the forefront of this issue." Ashby said Farm Bureau supports incentive based rather than punitive based efforts in non-poisource regulating pollution. He said Farm Bureau will be actively involved in making sure that agriculture's perspective in this important issue is not ignored. "Our main job is to ensure that farmers and ranchers play a major role in the dialog that will take place over the next few years with regards towards water quality," he said. Mr. Fredde noted that although counties which opt for the new sales taxes must decrease their property tax revenues by an amount equal to the sales tax revenue they generate, there is no provision to stop other local taxing entities from taking advantage of the decrease in county rates. "Those local entities could and, if past experience holds true, will increase their rates, thereby negating the effects of the tax switch and increasing taxes across the board." The Utah Taxpayers Association believes that the legislature should consider a imposing voting requirement in 1998, similar to that of 1995 and 1996, to discourage any unnecessary rate increases and to stop local governments and schools from taking advantage of the switch.
