Troy Gent, a 6'2H 180 lb Senior at BHS, pitted his speed, strength and jumping ability athletes in the state May against the best 3rd and 4th at the 72nd annual Brigham Young University Decathlon Championships. The event was dominated by the states SA and 4A participants, but Beaver's Gent and Morgan High Schools Kansas Whitcar put on a battle all of then-ow- n for bragging rights to be Utah's 2A's best all around athlete. Bear River's Curtis Puzsley won the Decathlon title in a field of 27 athletes with a nation leading 7340 point total, just shy of former BYU Decathlete great Keith Robinson's state record. Beaver's Gent earned an 1 1th place finish with a BHS school record 5 77 points, 1 00 points over what he scored in 96 for a 13th place finish. His point total would have won the competition in several past years and would have placed him fifth in last year's competition. Although the lanky senior's goal of finishing in the top six decathletes camp up a little short the BHS product can take some consolation from the fact that he bested the decathlon discus field by nearly ten feet with a 140'4" effort for 722 points and scored the most points of any 2A competitor at the Friday and Saturday competition. Kansas Whitear, a Morgan H.S. Trojan, seemingly had an insurmountable edge over Beaver's Gent after he ran a competition leading 50.3, 400 M dash for over 800 points to end Friday's competition. Gent's time in the weight room paid off as he winged the javelin for a state qualifying 1507" throw, nearly twenty feet more than he had ever thrown before in his life, to earn 529 points to Whitear's 1 15', 300 point effort to earn for BHS its first ever unofficial 2A decathlon BOYS & GIRLS Saturday, May 10th, 1997 Milford High School Milford, Utah Sarah Mayer Girls 4 X Relay Rachel Holm Sarah Mayer have Scores Over 5100 Points at BYU George Jenner was one of the first men to make bricks.
