Track & Field Junior Olympic (17-1- 8 age) State Decathlon Championships held at Orem High School in Utah Valley. The 6'2" 180 lb standout Beaver High School athlete scored a career high 5345 points in two days of competition in the ten event track and field decathlon. He outscored John Beckerstead of Provo High School 2nd place and Gary Nielson 3rd place of Orem High School to win his first ever state decathlon championship, after strong showings at both the 1996 & 1997 BYU State Decathlon Championships. Troy commented that at both BYU decathlon meets he dropped hundreds of points because of poor efforts in the long jump and high hurdles events. This did not happen at the U.S.A. meet. He long jumped nearly two feet further than his BYU distance and cut more than 1 Vi seconds off his BYU hurdles time to pick up more than 1141 points in those two events alone. He scored nearly 3,000 points to close out his first day of competition with a commanding lead over Provo High Schools' Beckerstead. "In reality I knew I only had a slim chance of out pointing BYU Champion & U.S.A. National Champion Curtis Pugsley of Bear River High School for the state championship, but when Curtis w as a "no show", because of a work commitment, I felt my chances were as good as the next guys"', quipped the U.S. Marine to be. He then added,,"My dad has always told me 'If you pick yourself up just one more time than you get knocked down, or just keep showing up, you. can eventually be a champion.' He made a believer out of mc last Monday and Tuesday in Orem." The State Decathlon title is the 9th state championship the outgoing Gent has earned the past four years in three different sports: 4 track & field, Washington and Utah, 2 powerlifting, Idaho and Utah, and 3 Olympic lifting ,Utah.
