Phone - - NEW YORK. Feb. 27 BUSINESS Lumbermen are feeling happier. The Commerce Department expects a 20 per cent increase in demand for lumber in the first quarter, and sales for all 1939 equal to 1937 volume of 25,100,000,000 feet end to end enuf to reach to the moon and back 10 times. About 22,000 retail lumber dealers stand to share this increase, which undoubtedly is attributable to the continued boomlet in residential construction. Druggists, it is learned, are still trying to get more sales out of soda fountains. Representatives of 60 stores, here last week, confided that fountain sales even now comprise 20 to 25 per cent of their total dollar sales. They look for a 1G per cent sales gain this spring in drug items. A prominent New York department store executive told friends in western Pennsylvania last week he is very optomistic about the future of retail trade and has unbound ed confidence in the ability of this country to combine great social reforms with great economic recovery. Possibly for him, facing the rosy prospect of selling to World's Fair visiters this summer, these superlatives are conservative.
