Thursday of each week. Published by THE LEADER PUBLISHING Incorporated WHAT MAKES A NEWSPAPER? A mistaken idea with some people is that the newspaper is an ndvdual propostion. If they don't like the editor, they feel they must knock the paper and stand in the way of its success whenever possible. They do not realize that the local paper is just as much a part of the community as the schools, churches or anything else. The newspaper is different from any other business, it is a community affair. It is for service to the people and not for any individual. You may not like the editor and the editor may not love you any too well but the paper he is responsible for does just as much for you as the service rendered others. There is nothing personal with it, it is here for a purpose and that purpose is to do what good it can in every way it can and the greater the support of those it undertakes to serve the better service it can render. It takes the people to make a good newspaper and without the help of the people no one can run a successful newspaper. It requires money to operate any kind of business even the churches and the papers are no exception and for this reason they must have the financial support of the business interest as well as the good will. Few newspaper publishers make more than a comfortable living and scarcely one is reported wealthy from money made in the newspaper business. They deserve to be trusted and to be understood by the people it is the editor and not the plant that makes a newspaper useful in a community, though a liberal patronage is necessary if the paper is to be a credit to the town. WEATHER AND BUSINESS People whose only knowledge of the merchantile business is of the vague sort common among and little buyers appreciate to what extent business is dependent upon atFew realize mospheric condtiions. that unfavorable weather can be as ruinous to merchants and manufacturers as to the farmer and the circus. It is doubtful if the vagaries of the weather have, in a very long time, had such a marked and detrimental effect on many lines of business as they have had this year. A long, cold and wet spring over a great portion of the country was followed by a short period of real summer weather and then another long period of unseasonable atmospheric conditions. The effect was to retard sales of apparel of all kinds and more especially such as is worn by men. At the seaside resorts business was in the main quite poor and more especially so because of the preponderance of wet Bathing suits could not be sold because the water was too cold to swim in ami suits were uncomfortable on the boardwalk because of the cold hap-haza- A CHRISTMAS CO. rd hot-weath- er week-end- s. hot-weath- er . SUGGESTION Christmas is not too far away to begin planning for it. Many of the churches have already begun to lay plans for the proper observance 6f Christ's natal day. There is so much about Christmas coming up with thoughts of it that, if one were to write, he easily could cover many pages and scarcely know it and yet, half of this sweetest story would remain untold. What a happy thing it would be this year to pick out somebody you know who ordinarily wil not have a happy Christmas somebody, whose life is not alj "roses and sunshine ;' somebody, whose story has been written with the pen rust of disappointment and despairing difficulties; somebody, whose soul has been pinched and his heart choked by the circumstances of fate, over which he or she had no control, but who remains firm in the conviction that there still is a Santa Claus, even though Santa dsiappeared out of his or her life in childhood forever. Think a little and you will see in your mind this man or woman, or mayhap a child. On every side they will be found. If you know the inside story of that man or that woman you do not like because of "something or other;" perhaps if you would draw a little closer and raise the curtain of their lives, you would stand back in amazement, and then wonder why you had disliked them without knowing why. Terhaps but, why go on ? Let us begin now to think of some one to make happy this Christmas some one who is undoubtedly overlooked in the mad, glad rush. Perhaps this some one may be rich or fniancially; it does not matter, whether rich or poor, make it a point this year to remember some of these unfortunate, unhappy victims around, whose lives fate seems to have hung a pall. i i I WW ; . . , w A0DD ; The Coats O EPRESENT every new phase of fashion for fall, 1929.
