Hill, keeping track of the number cf vehicles that pass a given point. Six of these automatic counters have been installed permanently at various points on important roads. There is one just south of Brigham City on U. S. Highway 91, another at the Draper Cross Roads (also ok U. 91), cne in Parley's Canyon and one in Daniels Canyon, both on U. S. 89 north of Richfield, and another west of Spanish Fork on For 24 hours each day they keep the record of traffic with totals for each hour of the 24 for every day of the year. Thus traffic trends and variations from day to day and year to year are available for the engineers who may be planning a new highway or the improvement of the present ones . In addition to the six permanent recorders, the Highway Planning Sur vey has two portable hourly recorders and four portable recorders which give final totals but not hourly totals. These machines are used for special surveys and traffic counts. The count of traffic is recorded when a strip of rubber tubing containing two wires is stretched acrcss the highway and the pressure of vehicle wheels brings the wires together and the contact oper ates the counting device in the ma chine. Another type of strip is a hoi low rubber tube. With this type, the forcing of air through the tube oper ates the number of device of the ma chine. All of which means that the science of traffic survey has developed to the point where trends and forecasts on traffic can be made for years ahead of the present time, and roads standards worked out to meet the needs of tiaffic for many years after the building of the highway. Thus the State Commission utilizes the latest scientific methods in planning and building the highways of the state for present and future generations. Mr. W. D. Hammond,, chairman of the commission, is urging the coop eration of the public in preventing tampering with the machines so that accurate recordings can be made 5. 114.65 & jjh-liu- - jndavisit r . by the side of the highway?
