Indeed, it might be proper to say they are auxiliaries to the one industry which has made Utah and Salt Lake famous in days gone by and which is destined in the coming years to make of the one a great commonwealth and.the other a magnificent city. Ed ae % Allusion is made to the mining industry, which, although even now a pursuit which is magnificent in proportion, is yet in an embryo state, as compared with what it will be ere many more summers and winters have passed into the blank which is behind us. From the northern portion of the State—aye, even further than that, into Idaho’s hills and Montana’s mountains—the heavily weighted ore trains bring daily to the city carloads and carloads of ores from which are extracted precious minerals. Far away in Nevada the mighty locomotives haul in rocks from which the smelter takes bright silver and gold. Up from the southland come the wheeled caravans with the cargoes of money metals. In the hills of the eastern portion the sound of the mill is heard and the stamps and crushers, day and night, add to the tribute which is poured into the lap of the capital city of the State. There are camps and camps, all within a short distance of Salt Lake City, which have achieved reputations national in character, and to us who live in the town do they look for markets. * x * And. as time rolls on others will be developed. Though the miner has walked over the length and breadth of the land, there are places which, in the days of mining as it was once carried on, were not considered worthy of attention. These now are becoming veritable mints to those who have invested in them. Not only does this allusion apply to the more precious metals, but to other materials which the world STREET FIRST FIRST SOUTH SOUTH SCENES * cK * It is not the purpose to enter into detail as concerns all the many advantages alluded to. Investigation will demonstrate better than any brief expressions such as are contained in this article. Now, presuming that all these advantages are admitted, as they must be, it remains but to say that in order to secure wealth one need go no farther, but investing here, will derive that needful article so necessary for the proper enjoyment of existence. Presuming this has been acquired, the question which next confronts us is: ““What natural and artificial advantages are there here which will admit of the comfort of the person being enhanced?” To reply to this one needs ample space. But in brief the answer is: ES ck bd Primarily the city is a most beautiful one. Green as an emerald, surrounded by grand hills and mountains whose snow-capped peaks contrast with the beauty of nature’s verdure, with its wide streets and shaded thoroughfares, with sparkling streams of bright crystal running down pebbled courses on either side as one walks abroad, the torrid heat of the centers of the remote East is absent and the evil effects so manifest to them are not here. The rush of the tornado and the roar of the devastating cyclone are unknown; the severe rigors of the winters of less fortunate localities are never felt. ok k % The climate is superb. As indirectly mentioned in the preceding paragraph, the extremes of heat and cold are never felt. And it is indeed a poor scholar who does not know that in a place of the character which is conspicuously even in the matter of temperature, as is this, sickness is less frequent by a large percentage than where the opposite is the condition. The death rate in Salt Lake City is less than one per cent., when applied to actual residents. True, the actual must be remembered that there are with the seeds of disease so firmly of science aided with the resources : 3 The city is a natural sanitarium. Added to advantages of climate are mineral springs, placed here by kind nature for the healing of the people who are ill and the prolonging of the existences of those who are in health. Convenient to all are these baths, where pain flees at the first contact with the medicinal waters. The sufferer who has endured for years the agonies of disease comes here and as if touched by a magic wand he is cured of his ills. Breathing the fresh, pure air and drinking the limpid waters from the hills, subsisting upon the succulent vegetables and the ripe and juicy fruits, he has the health restored to his wasted frame and g0e8 away he does go—a new being. * At the feet of the city, its blue waters rolling and dancing in the sun, which shines more days in a year on Salt Lake than any other town or city on the globe, lies that wonder of wonders, Great Salt Lake, the Dead Sea of America. It is but a few minutes’ ride to either of the two great resorts which have been constructed for the accommodation of the people who live here and who come here. On the bosom of the inland ocean he may float and enjoy the greatest bathing known. There is no need for him to have a knowledge of swimming, the water will bear him up; and when he has finished he will don his attire in haste, wondering why he is so hungry after the bath, because of all appetizers a dip in the lake is the superior. He will find at either place all that human appetite may crave at his disposal, and when the meal has been finished, to the strains of excellent music he can trip the light fantastic steps of the dance with his wife, sister or sweetheart, or go out on the bright waters for a sail. One does not want for pleasures at the lake. It is worth a trip to Utah to sit and view one of its wonderful sunsets. Where the ruddy light shines on the opalescent skies as the sun sinks to rest behind the purple hills and the green waters blush rosy crimson at the good night kiss of the orb of day and IN SALT LAKE CITY. STREET—EAST. STREET—WEST. demands as well. The deposits of the island of Trinidad pale before the bituminous formations of eastern Utah; the sulphur mines of the world take second place when those of this State are referred to; the gypsum, marble, kaolin, iron and other deposits of valuable material rank second to none. ; death rate is a trifle more, but it many who come here every year planted in them that all the skill of nature is futile and whey’ die. EAST TEMPLE STREET. SECOND SOUTH STREET. the soft zephyrs whisper as glories beyond, of which the e the shades fali over the scene of picture fading out is but a lesson. Bo the os All round the city, leading up through the mountains, are canyons grand in their character, down which tumble clear streams of water which sing songs the livelong day. If one is poetical he can sit by the bank and listen to the music and through his heart will come a deep peace. If he is practical, he can whip the waters with a fly and exult as the gamy brook trout rises to the bait. If he is an artist with pencil and brush he can depict the grandeur of the rugged rocks and granite walls which tower above. . * 2 * Not far distant from the city are localities where in season the deer bounds down the narrow trails, inviting the sportsman to enjoy the sensation’ of making a good shot; where the whirring grouse wings his way he will find rare sport; if he but go far enough he will come to the regions where the mammoth grizzly snarls defiance and the shrill cry of the cougar awakens him in the night to activity. Beautiful lakes adjacent to Salt Lake abound with the gamy bass and trout, the whitefish and the crappy. If one is too tired to walk up the canyons and whip the streams, a boat and a trolling line will afford the pleasure sought. These are but a few of the natural advantages. Let us turn to the others. aE %* a The people of Salt Lake City are as generous and kind hearted as those of any other. They are affable and love amusement and pleasure. The doors of the best homes are ever open to men and women of true worth and society’s members do not measure the worth of a person by the accumulated coins he possesses. There are places of amusement equal to any in the West, and the artist who listens to the encores of the audience of Gotham finds his efforts are equally appreciated by the people of Salt Lake, and he comes and comes again. The lover of music will find everything here to gratify his taste and will make the acquaintance of artists of ability. Salt Lake is a city of music.
