Show THE ARGUS. 10 CYCLING NEWS. AMG and ineffectual efforts have been made these many moons to infuse something of life into the remains of bicycle racing enthus- iasm in this great city of Zion. Lame because the few who attempted the infusing had little hopes of success in their attempt, and ineffectual because the key string of future success had not been attuned to attract the great body of wheelmen. As far as Salt Lake is concerned, the sport is about dead. Everybody is disgusted with the prevalent inaction, and everybody blames everybody else for the deplorable results. Salt Lake during the past season has, had one third or fourth rater attracted from the elysium of racing in the East into showing his powers before an admiring hundred or two at Becks. Our best riders of past days Evans, Weiler and a number of others, wouldnt ride, and for a good reason there was nothing in it for them, hardly carfare, at any one of the fizzles called meets that have been in evidence the past season. If it had not been for the abortive attempt at secession inaugurated by a few disgruntled members of the L. A. W. for the express purpose of having some good racing, the apathy which then enmantled the body official of the L. A. W. would not have lifted for a moment from appearances at that period, but have prevented even less sport than has been tendered to a public. It is useless tendering advice, so all we can do is to hope for that time when Sunday racing will be allowed by the magnates of cycledom, which, we believe, even here will result in something like a resuscitation from the remains before mentioned. non-appreciati- ve and in this respect Starbuck had the call. Both went off from a standing start, and each picked up triplet pacers. Starbuck got the pole, but in the second lap Michael picked up a sextet and assumed the lead. At the end of the second mile the little Welshman was a hundred yards ahead and at the end of the third mile he was 400 yards ahead. From this point to the end of the race Michael had a very decided advantage. Michael had gained a lap on his adversary. Then for five or six miles both men alternated in the lead, although there was a lap to Michaels credit, but the little fellow when nicked up by his favorite quad or sextet was enough in reserve to show his superiority over Starbuck, as he passed him at will. The fifteenth mile was run in the fastest time, 1 minute and 52 seconds. The slowest mile run was the thirty-third- , but this could be easily accounted for through the fact that Michael was nearly seven laps ahead and took things easy, covering the last mile in From the fifteenth mile to 2 :12 the end of the race Michael beat every standing record previously established in a contest. Frank Waller finished second and six-day- s Harry D. Elkes third. The first five men to finish all beat the best previous record of 874 miles by a large margin. Barnaby at the finish led Waller by about twenty yards, but the two men are credited with the same number of miles for the week. The principal final scores were: Barnaby, 993.1; Waller, 993.1 ; H. D. Elkes, 985.1; Dench, 923.2; Foster, 907. L. A.
