FG WEBBER, Supt. “The light of the World_ tempted fraud. <>-0-2---<>=> +--+ It is, perhaps, not generally known that Utah, by its first Senatorial election can largely if not absolutely dictate the control of the United States Senate in the Fifty-fourth Congress. The present Senate, if Dupont of Delaware, concerning the validity of whose election there is some doubt, is admitted, will consist of 39 Democrats, | ' 48 Republicans, 4 Populists, and two silver men, the latter from Nevada, ~ one of whom, Jones, is a Republican on all but the silver question, and Stewart is an Ishmaelite. With Jones the Republicans have exactly half the Senate. With the opposition consolidated against them the Republicans lack two of a majority, their strength being 48 to 45. If Utah elects two Republicans the Senate will be a tie as between the Republicans and the field, and, counting Jones of Nevada with them, the Republicans will have an absolute majority of two. On the other hand, if Utah elects Democratic Senators, the Republicans will have but 438 against 47 of all other species. The importance of this:is apt to be overlooked. The House is more than two-thirds Republican, while the Presidency is Democratic with deplorable unanimity. The superficial thinker is inclined to say that, under the circumstances, it makes little difference about the complexion of the Senate, since in any case it could not join the House in overriding an exec“utive veto so long as the Democracy ~ yetain. considerably, more than one third of its membership. _ ee SEO SRO SECT CC OUR Ce athe The importance of the matter lies THE MOST STYLISH.
