A few years since a company was organized for the purpose of utilizing the ores of Ogden blast furnace, was Canyon, and a n erected and machinery purchased for a large and small rolling mill. It was the intention to run these by water power, for which there were abundant facilities, but sufficient capital was not at their command to conduct the enterprise successfully. We understand that efforts are being made to procure the requisite capital to start the works and place them in running order, which 20-to- , efforts we trust will be successful. Iron has been discovered lately at the head of Provo Canyon,' southeast of Salt Lake City, and about fifty-fiv- e from it, and also miles distant still farther south in Sevier Canyon, between, Juab and Millard counties. We cannot speak from experience in regard to the quality of the ores, not having seen them, but they are said to be very good, but rather difficult of access at present. Iron also exists in large quantities in Mill Creek Mining District, Morgan county, .about 21 miles distant from Salt Lake City, and only 10 miles from Weber Station on the Union Pacific Railroad. A number of locations have been made in this district, but very little continuous work has been done except by the Norway Iron Company. The mines, owned by this company have breen worked quietly for several years, ever since their discovery, and now. produce large quantities of iron, the quality of which is said by experts to equal the. famous Norway and Swedish iron. Some of the ores carry silver with an increasing proportion of gold, and the indications in this particular are so encouraging that they are hopeful of striking a large body of the more precious metal. Over twenty thousand dollars have already been expended on these properties, and the owners have incorporated under ' the laws of Utah, for the further purpose of manufacturing iron. It is the intention of the Norway Company to erect a furnace and mills as :soon as possible, which they hope to be able to do before th close of next season. In summing up we might say that it would be easier to describe the localities where iron does not exist in Utah Territory, than to tell where it is to be found. Traces of the mineral may be seen almost anywhere, and new discoveries, either in large or small quantities, are constantly being made. And in the localities where it exists in large deposits, fine coal beds are in near proximity, and sandstone and fireclay abound in almost inexhaustible quantities. In some of these localities, within a radius of the iron beds proper in addition to coal for fuel, may be found six different classes of iron ores,' fire rock, fire clay, lime and first class sand for mouldings, which constitute all the requisites for the cheap and successful manufacture of iron. Nothing is needed to utilize these vast resources but enterprise and capital, and it is safe to say that the latter may be as profitably and safely invested, or even more so, than in silver mines, and to the more permanent benefit of the Territory. , . & 7 City proper.
