(Adopted unanimously by the Womans National Society, at its regular meeting held on Tuesday, Nov. 1st at Salt Lake City, Utah.) Anti-polygam- y To the Honorable Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives: clerk of the Whereas, the House of Representatives having placed the name of George Q. Cannon on the roll of the House, as delegate from Utah, in place of that of Allen G. Campbell, who holds a certificate of election from the Governor of the Territory, and as the United States District Court has pronounced the Certificate of Citizenship held by said Cannon to be false and fraudulent, we, the members of the Womans National Society, do hereby petition you to expel said George Q. Cannon from your Honorable body for the following reasons, to wit: i st. That George Q. Cannon is an alien, having left the United States being a British subject at the time, in that he returned to this 1849 or I85 city on the 2gth day of Nov., 85 4 as proved by the files of his own paper; that the only evidence of citizenship which he has is dated Dec. 7th 1354; that there are no records to show that he was in court on that day; that the only evidences of his naturalization is contained in a certificate given him by a Mormon clerk, and that it was hot possible for him to make at that time any showing to any Court, by which, under the laws he could have obtained a legal Certificate of Citizenship. 2nd. That George Q. Cannon is not, n and cannot become an American inasmuch as lie in temporal affairs holds a Church superior to the State, and gives to that Church an allegiance so much superior to any he yields the Government, that, as an apostle of that Church, he preaches disobedience to the laws, and in private life practices such disobedience, claiming his right to do so, under laws higher than United States laws. That on account of his im3rd. moralities he ought to be expelled from the House of Representatives, for the reason that he lives with and is raising families by four women whom he calls his wives. The names of said women and the number of their children are as follows: Elizabeth Hoagland Cannon, has six children, four sons and two daughters. Sarah Jane Jenny, has four sons and Anti-polyga- 1 citi-ize- one daughter. Eliza Tinney, has two children, boys. Martha Tilly, has five children, twin girls and three boys. Fourth. We would also respectfully represent to your Honerable Body, that as the signs of the times indicate that the period is approaching for the final solution of the Mormon problem, and that as the people of this country look to you for that solution, you cannot com mence your work in a more effective manner than by expelling George Q. No man of his type was more popular in the National capital than this delegate from Utah. Dr. Bernhisel succeeded Mr. Hooper, then came Kinney, then Hooper again, who did effective work in preventing any legislation which was calculated to affect the peculiar institution of the Mormon Church. (Opinions differ very materially in regard to Mr. Hooper being a good Mormon, but it is safe to say that if he is not, he finds it to his advantage to appear so, and to maintain a good standing in the church.) During Mr. Hoopers last term the subject was agitated considerably, and the Gentile residents of Utah began to take steps to draw the attention of the country to the state of affairs in Utah. were circulated against Petitions a as admission its State, semade to efforts were and cure some legislation by which the United States Laws could be enforced The Womans National Will all our exchanges, and every Society, at the commencement in the country of another years work desire to reit- newspaper or journal who receives this number of the Stanerate their appeals made in the past to dard kindly copy the above Appeal to the women of our country for aid. the Women of America, and also the Polygamy with its kindred evils, which it is desired to circulate still flourishes unchecked in Utah, and petition for signatures.
