Dear Sir: 1 like the country very much so far; have seen a great number of farmers from the states and every one seen ao far says they have done well and like It here tar better than where they came from, and all claim it to be the best country for a poor man that they were ever in, and with good crops this season I predict a great rush. There are some nice claims to be had yet, but will not last the summer through. I do not find it any colder than in Iowa and am feeling much better than when I left there March 1st I think this a great country for those who are suffering with throat and lung troubles. I have seen men that had as high as 5U4 bushels wheat per acre and near 100 bushels oats, but they weigh from 45 to 51 pounds per bushel, but the general run Is 25 to 60 wheat, 50 to 75 oats, and stock looking fine; some rattle running out were nearly in market flesh. I expect to return to the states late this fall for stock, etc.; will write you when 1 want to go. Thanking you all for past favors, I remain, most respectfully yours, Dr. 1). E. St re veil. Elder Golden Kimball, in a brief discourse at the tabernacle Sunday after noon, February 19, expressed bis in. elination to speak out plainly in meeting whatever he felt to be needed Saints, and in among the Latter-da- y this line declared the Importance oi missionary work at home, pointing especially to married men between ths ages of 30 and 43 years, among whorn he said, the moat difficulty had bees experienced in arousing an interest. Regarding his plainness in speaking he said there had been some critloisq which was not charitable, but cams from the other place. The last time I spoke here, he continued, some friends came to me and said: 'It won't do for you to talk today.' 'Why? I asked. Hecause we have strangers here today.' I wish they would come and tell me what to say and say it. I welcome strangers and have respect for all religions, for I have been treated kindly by strangers. The speaker said he realised that many people are afraid of popular clamor; that they would go to war with Spain as brave warriors, but were afraid .to meet public opinion. The .only thing to consider, however, is to have one's conscience clear. In declaring that aU is not well in Zion, Elder Kimball said that the priesthood had never muzzled him and that it was not the place for Latter-da-y Saints to tell what hie should say or should not say. lie knew that some deviltry was at work among the people. Last winter a great missionary work was undertaken. It was discovered that a certain percentage of the young men were going wild. Communications were sent out to 300 young men, who were called just as if to go and preach the gospel. One hundred and had fifty had responded, ninety-nin- e been excused and thirty have not yet. From four to ten of these young men who responded were placed in each stake for three months. As missionaries they have visited hundreds of careless young men and endeavored to convert them. One report from Uintah stake was the most flattering and showed that four elders faad baptized eighty five young men, which was a good work. Great and good work had been accomplished, but there had been discouragement alsa Much difficulty had been encountered among young married men who have settled down to mental drowsiness and refused to join in the work, and fathers and mothers have justified them in their conduct. There is a greater field for missionary work at home than anywhere else, and the priesthood should be looking after the people. Preceding Elder Kimball, Elders Sainsbury and George B. Baker, who have lately returned from a mission to the British Isles, made brief addresses on the work accomplished. The latter said the aiders In England were not persecuted, but had much opposition to contend against. This condition, be said, was the life of the elders, for opposition brought out all the good there was in them. lie said a man who should try to preach the gospel without scrip or purse in England would be a pretty sick man when he got a self-protecti- ..... 4 .US .04 .04 ..... ............ ... IIlll, lately returned from a mission to the southern states, also spoke of the work in that part of the country. The people of the south were somewhat behind the times in regard to improvements and in many respects were lacking in literary advantages. They were very religious, however, though generally objecting to any innovations by the Latter-daSaints. Two elders working in Atlanta have the freedom of the beat hotels and are otherwise courteously treated, ao that in BOine instances the people were beginning to become more liberal. About 1,800 people were added to the church from the southern states last year.
