New .York of Martin Thorn for the murder of Wm. In which Mrs. N&ck was an will accomplice, have a striking parallel when the case of George 1L Dobbs as principal nd Mr a. Amelia New aa accessory In the murder of her husband, Joseph New, Oct. 31, comes to trial at Wichita. The circumstances surrounding the murder are peculiar, and the case has aroused unusual interest. Mr. and Mrs. New were at home Sunday night, the last day of October, with two young ladles, their nieces. About 9:30 Mrs. New awoke her husband and told him she heard a queer noise, like some one throwing pebbles against the house, and asked him to see what was the matter. New said he could hear nothing, and would not get up. He dosed until presently Mrs. New again aroused him, saying she could bear the pebbles striking the house again. The husband still refused to go and see what might be the cause of the noise that Mrs. New said she could hear. After a while there was a loud noise, as if someone had drawn a stick down across the weatherboarding. Mr. New then got up, and while he was preparing to go and see what the noise was Mrs. New lighted the lantern, which, it would seem, she had placed conveniently, anticipating some such a necessity for a lamp. When New had gone something like forty feet from the door there was a loud report, as If a shotgun had been fired. New had gone out at the east door toward the barn. As soon as the shot was fired Mrs. New went out of the west door and went straight to the house of a neighbor, nearly a mile away, and notified the folks that' her husband had been shot This was shown In the testimony before the coroners Jury. The tap nieces were left alone at the house and Mrs' New did not know that her husband had been hurt at all, except that immediately following the shot there was a cry of "Oh, my God! which, according to the testimony of Mrs. New and the two girls, seemed to be the voice of Mr. New. George II. Dobbs was arrested at Eureka Nov. 9. Later In the day Mrs. New, wife of the murdered man, was accused of being accessory to the xrlme. After the murder suspicion fell on Dobbs, who almost at once took up his abode at Mrs. New's house. Other strong circumstantial evidence developed. Dobbs is a widower with two small children and has resided In tbs neighborhood of the murdered man for two years. Ho' was at the place soon after the murder and helped with all the funeral arrangements, lie even sat on the coroners jury which derided that New was foully murdered by some unknown person. On the night that New was shot Dobbs bad borrowed a shotgun from a neighbor in the afternoon, saying he wanted to shoot some quail. He returned the gun that night, saying he had not killed any game. When he was arrested he said he had not fired the gun at all, but an examination of the gun showed that he had. Dobbs had been quite Intimate with Mrs. New and frequently held long conversations ft HE trial In GEO. II. DODDS. with her. When he took up his home at her house so soon after the killing there was a strong suspicion and much talk of lynching until the arrests were made and Mrs. New brought to Wichita by Sheriff Knox of Greenwood county. About twelve years ago News brother, a bachelor, was found hanging to the celling of his own house, dead. The coroners Jury at that time decided that it was a case of suicide, but an attempt will now be made to find out something more about that case, as well as the mur- der of Joseph New. Mrs. New is a woman of average height and somewhat thin. Her hair is of a light brown, her eyes are blue ANDY CATHARTIC ed murder. She Is easily approached on every subject that does not lead directly to her connection with the events of the night on which her husband was murdered but ready to adroitly avoid answering any question that bears directly on her side of the case. She insists that as soon as she has talked with her lawyer she will tell all, but until then she said she would have to be careful. She asserted, however, that she had no Idea who was her husbands murderer and that she bad no connection with his killing. George Dobbs, who It Is charged sustained Improper relations with her and fired the shot that killed her husband, had worked as her husbands farm hand and she said the two men had been very friendly. They always got along together as brothers, in fact She married New sixteen years ago, and she says she never bad any serious trouble with him. J Don't judge Carload aiM Morristown was laughing last night over an amusing practical Joke played upon at least half a score of prominent persona Several days ago a firm of builders had consigned to them a carload of wooden horses, such as are used in erecting scaffolds for workmen, says the New York Herald. The car remained at the freight station until today, when it met the gaze of a prankish boy and a scheme arose In his fertile brain. Meeting a chum he confided the scheme to him and together they carried it out must suctown a telephone Going cessfully. names of several hunted the up they active members of. the society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals r.nd told them by wire that "there was a carload of horses at the station that had neither food nor water for three days." This startling Information sent a chill of horror through the veins of the merciful horse protectors and they lost no time in hunting up their agents and demanding that immediate action be taken against the wretches who would so brutally treat a dumb animal. The report reached the ears of a reporter for a local paper, and he rushed pell mell toward the railroAd station to record the awful news. Imparting the knowledge to all whom he met. At last the throng reached the freight station and excitedly demanded from one of the clerks that he forthwith show them the horses. The clerk was puzzled to know what the demonstration meant, but as there was but one car containing horses in the yard he merely pointed it out The quiet that settled over the crowd reminded one of a graveyard, but the next moment It dawned upon them that they had been fooled and with sheepish looks they departed from the scene, vowing vengeance upon the practical joker.
