Wanlass tells a great story about how the Navy once seemed to get the best of the Marines. When the war was over, our ship was picked to be the first ship, and our crew the first crew, to go onto Japanese soil. That's because the destroyer de-stroyer is the biggest ship that is still called "expendable." As we entered Yokohama Bay, we blew up the floatingTnines with our 40mm's, our object being to shoot them before we ran into them. Some of us sailors got into a whale boat and went ashore. The Japanese had all been told that the Americans would rape the women and kill the men and the kids. So the Japanese Japa-nese were all scared to death of us. We also had to wear sidearms. There was not a sign of a single person the first day we walked down the street. But that changed. The second day we went ashore, people ahead of us and behind us peered out of their doors. By the third day, the Japanese were selling us souvenirs. We were giving the kids candy, the women food and the men cigarettes. I had my instruction booklets, book-lets, so we could translate back and forth. Only later did I learn that what the book told me to say in Japanese was "Come out or I'll shoot!" Common folklore says that if both Marines Ma-rines and sailors end up in a People started pouring out of their homes. I was petrified, not knowing how to tell them to go back inside. I felt like an absolute fool. We were there quite a while before the American Army and Marines arrived. They hit the beach, all in their battle gear, their guns ready. Their attitude was "We're here to take over." We sailors were standing at the top of the beach, in our regular uniforms, waving white flags and yelling, "Hi, guys! Glad you made it! We give up! We surrender!" The Marines were so mad they nearly shot us. They just looked at us and said a few choice words. It's a story you won't find in the history books. But I've got to admire the American soldiers. They took a lot of food to the Japanese women, who were starving. The men would go to the storehouses, buy candy and cigarettes, and make good friends. Once the Japanese learned that we were not going go-ing to do to them what they'd been told we'd do, they were very nice to us. Here's another true story you won't find in the history books. His barge was all decked out. We lowered our motorized whaleboat, but the guys were in such a' hurry that they forgot to put the plugs in the bottom of the boat. (You leave the plugs in a whaleboat till you're going to use it, so any water will drain out.) As the captain and his executive ex-ecutive started across to the barge, they began to sink. They just barely made it back to our ship. The Japanese must have been saying among themselves, "And we lost the war to these guys?!" The captain and his executive ex-ecutive officer changed their clothes, pulled the boat up, let the water out, put the plugs in, and started off again. They went to the barge as best they could without laughing and got aboard. The captain and the admiral had their little ceremony. cer-emony. The captain came back with a big basket of fresh fruit something we hadn't seen for a long time. He called me in and asked, "Chris, do you think we dare eat this?" I said, "Sir, they wouldn't dare try to poison us now." We both tried the fruit, as we had our laugh, though we were a little ashamed of ourselves over all that had happened. Next week: Chris Wanlass visits Hiroshima, is later assigned "birddog" duty, and wraps up his Navy career. 003 Peace of Mind will V 1 1 I 1 1 1 1 hwipi .mtllllMIIIIIIIIIIIMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIHMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIlrf. There is no feeling like eating a warm and tasty muffin, until the feeling you get afterward. My "muffin top" hangs over my jeans just a bit more than I would like, and the feeling I get from that is very unpleasant. unpleas-ant. Because of this I try to stav awav from muffins as much as possible, but muffins call my name in this low whisper whis-per that I cannot turn away from. I have tried to find a muffin that will not give me such a heavy feeling of guilt, but the only kind of muffin that tastes good is one that will make you feel guilty. I am pleased to share with you a couple of healthier muffin muf-fin recipes that taste good and should leave you feeling guilt free. Also, I will share a few tips to make your muffins taste light, flavorful and delicious. deli-cious. When making muffins, mix batter only until the ingredients ingredi-ents are moistened. The batter should appear lumpy; otherwise other-wise you will have a tough muffin. If you over mix, your muffin will be full of holes which lets the steam and heat that produces a soft muffin A great product Your advertising message can reach more than 92,000 readers every Sunday in the Daily Herald. , rnx ----- 1 (i i rm 3m Let I I Insure four Boat, Trailer & ATVs Pays for Buydownl it 1 t. n escape Remove your muffins from the baking tin immediately after baking to prevent them from becoming soggy. Muffins Muf-fins do not reheat well, due to the thickness of the batter, so try to eat them warm and on the day they were prepared. If you mix all the dry ingredients ingredi-ents for your muffins ahead of time, they are easier to prepare pre-pare when you are in a hurry. Just add the liquid and bake. I would suggest always using us-ing a cupcake liner to bake muffins. This makes for an easy clean up, and easy removal re-moval from the pan. When baking muffins in a muffin tin or cupcake tin, and you do not have enough batter to fill all of your cups, fill any empty cups half way with water. This will prevent your tins from warping, warp-ing, which would cause your muffins and cupcakes to bake un-evenly. Always preheat your oven so your muffins rise evenly and cook even from top to bottom.
