DAN DAVISCourtesy photo Mallory Davis, left, dives in to home plate to score in the fourth inning against Skyline on Saturday in the St. George Invitational. The Cavemen beat the Eagles, 10-4. Rewind Continued from Page 6 American Fork coach Duke Sorenson said. "We had 12 hits, and we committed four errors this afternoon. What helped us to pull out a win tonight was our hitting. It's been our big problem until the second day of the St. George Tournament. "We had three doubles among the hits we had. Mallory Mal-lory Davis, Cydne Mason and Amy Krommenhoek each hit a double for us today." Beside scattering seven Provo hits through the course of the thriller, pitcher Annie Christensen posted the first American Fork hit when she bunted a one-out single during the top of the first. However, the hit got neutralized neutral-ized by a putout created by a throw from Bulldog catcher Kylee Griffen to second baseman base-man Hannah Ogren. In the bottom of the inning, Provo grabbed a 2-0 lead on an infield error and a Julia Santiago Santi-ago single hit into center field. Third baseman Shelby Swapp snatched an Ogren fly ball to end the inning before Provo could up a third run. Singling into right at the start of the second inning, Haley Holmstead scored a run on an error at second after Mason had slugged a single. Though Sandra Nessler hit a left-field single in the third, American Fork couldn't tie the score at two that inning. Still, the Cavemen kept Provo scoreless in the second and third innings. Hitting her second straight single in the fourth, Holmstead soon scored a tying run on Mason's two-out two-out double, but the Bulldogs sneaked back ahead that inning. in-ning. In its lower half, Santiago Santi-ago singled into center, then came home on Liz Taylor's left-field single. Nessler didn't let Provo enjoy the 3-2 lead for long. On no outs the next inning, she singled into center, and Krommenhoek doubled her in to open a four-run rally in the fifth. Christensen scored a tie-breaking tie-breaking run on a Davis sacrifice sacri-fice groundout. Kayla Sorenson singled in two runs, then got pinched in a fielder's choice play at second, ending the top half. Provo delivered cuts to American Fork's 6-3 lead during the bottom halves of the fifth and sixth innings. Tripling in the bottom of the fifth, Griffin came home on a Sarah Law sacrifice fly. In the sixth, Hannah Belnap doubled in Taylor to put the Bulldogs within 6-5. After hitting her seventh-inning double into center, Davis led Swapp home during an error, stretching American Fork's lead to three. American Ameri-can Fork intercepted three straight flies in the bottom of the seventh to hold Provo scoreless. Young AF track team aims to be competitive Dean Von Memmott SPORTS CORRESPONDENT The American Fork track team expects to finish among the middle of the Region 4 teams at this May's league championships. That's the forecast given by American Fork head track coach Art Taylor. He said, "Because we lost a lot of kids to graduation last year, I don't expect that we'll finish at region as the top team, but we will be in the middle. "The schools I expect will have a good chance at taking tak-ing region this year are Timpanogos, Lone Peak and Spanish Fork." Taylor said, "We have a lot of new kids coming out this year. We'll see how quickly they can fill the shoes of those who graduated." The coach said that so far, 40 boys and 20 girls have come out for track. Taylor added, "We may have some more kids come out in the next couple of weeks." "On the boys side, we have a couple of seniors who may place really high in the hurdlers," hur-dlers," the coach said. "They are Ben Christensen and Alan Smith." Taylor said that among the sprinters to watch out for this year are Chris Wernli and Andy Bangerter. The coach said those two Cavemen "have the potential for placing high at region and state." "Ben Felix is our top returning return-ing distance runner. He did the mile and two-mile well for us last year," Taylor said. Felix placed in the top 20 at the state cross country meet last fall as well. Among the throwers that the Cavemen will have back this year is Dan Litchford. Taylor said, "Litchford was our top thrower in the discus and shot. "Our top two returning girls distance runners this year are Alexis Laws and Danielle West," the coach said. "They were among the top 10 runners in the region cross country meet. They should do very well in the mile and two-mile this year." Taylor said Lori Clemons and Rochelle Stevens show a lot of promise as sprinters this year. The coach added, "We expect ex-pect both of them will have a good chance to make it to the finals of the region meet." The Cavemen are scheduled to open their season with a three-way meet at Spanish Fork on March 18. American Ameri-can Fork will compete at its first weekend meet at the Asics Invitational, hosted by Timpanogos April 4-5. The Cavemen will host the region meet May 7-8.
