I S I I I US, I SELECTED INCIDENTS Bits and pieces of dyed money found by an Avis rental car employee em-ployee Friday led to the arrest of a suspect in four Utah County bank robberies. David William Smith, 28, of Murray, was arrested Thursday night on a parole violation. He was later connected to the robberies, rob-beries, said Orem police Lt. Doug Edwards. Police say he was using the money for living expenses. Smith was stopped by a Salt Lake police officer for a traffic violation on Thursday, while driving a dark blue Jeep Cherokee that was rented from Avis. After he was arrested, the vehicle was returned to the company. com-pany. When employees searched the Jeep on Friday, they found bits of red dyed money, as well as other indications that a red dye pack connected to stolen money had exploded inside the vehicle, according to police. When the Alpine Credit Union in Orem was robbed on March 12, red dye exploded around the suspect's car. Police said at the time that the suspect probably had dye inside his vehicle and on his body because of the nature of the dye packs. Edwards said that police and the FBI linked Smith to the robberies, and Smith will be charged in federal court. They say they even have a motive. "It wasn't drug-related; we don't believe it was a drug problem," prob-lem," Edwards said. "He was living in a motel. I think much of what he stole went to living expenses." ex-penses." Edwards said that not much of the money taken in the four bank robberies was recovered.
