Mandi also worked in the American Fork Emergency Hxm where co-workers remember her as happy and cheerful and a wonderful friend to everyone. She was honored as LR employee of the year as well. In her obituary that ran on I eb. 20 her family wrote, "She found her greatest strength in her association with her family and friends and her enduring faith in Cmd. Her dearest wish was realized when she and Jake were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on April 1, 2'XM." Mandi truly loved life and those around her and was always al-ways striving to serve them. I met Mandi in June of 2004, after recruiting her to speak at the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life (my current baby) Opening Ceremonies. I had attended a dinner earlier that year to raise money for some of Mandi's treatments and had immediately been struck by her amazing attitude towards her life and the trials that she was currently going through. She came and spoke of how you have to use everything that life throws at you to your advantage. ad-vantage. She also spoke of how you can draw strength from those around you. She lived those words perfectly. The following year Lehi City f ire Department put together a team for Relay For Life. They raised money and then walked as "Mandi's Marchers." Mandi was there as a survivor and was still bright and happy, even as sick as she was. She was still fighting. As I stood there looking at the woman who I look up to, and also her husband, who has more strength than I think I'D ever have, I again realized why I go through the motions every year trying to pull together a event that sometimes makes me feel more crazy than anything. As I walked by that casket and shook Jake's hand I realized real-ized why I do Relay For Life. I do it in the hope that we will find a cure, in the hope that there will be fewer spouses who have to bury their sweethearts. I do it in the hope that we will no longer have to bury 9-year-old boys who die from a brain tumor. I do it so that we can find a cure for cancer. That is why we do Relay For Life. As I left the viewing, Jake leaned over to me and said, "Count us in for Relay this year." He is grieving, but apparently ap-parently he has that same hope. But we can't do it alone. We need everyone in this community, northern Utah County, to help us in the crusade cru-sade against cancer. For more information on how you can help, please attend our Team Captains Meeting on March 1 at 6:30 p.m. at Jim's Family Restaurant, 834 E. State St., American Fork. Relay For Life will take place at Lehi High School on June 2 and 3. The whole community is invited to attend and help us fight cancer. Utah County Association of REALTORS www.utoot.torri -J ""I Resolution on The Natural Family is not bigoted or narrow minded Editor: A response from Alpine City Councilman Kent Hastings: I am writing to clarify and describe many inaccuracies in the letter published about the natural family resolutioa You may call the family resolution politically incorrect but you certainly cannot call it bigoted, prejudiced, or narrow-minded. narrow-minded. Why? The resolution distills down the hard facts that countless studies through the past several decades and even centuries have proven. The resolution is not based on beliefs but proven facts. We mast be open-minded enough to look at the facts and reconsider recon-sider our own beliefs that may not be supported by the truth. Here are the facts: Last year alone, many studies stud-ies have shown that children that come from homes with married parents are better adjusted. They have lower drug abase, lower promiscuity, lower delinquency, and better academic achievement. Research last year indicates that married adults are healthier, health-ier, happier, and live longer than unmarried adults. Abstracts of these studies can be found at www.profam. org 'purVarchivem-.htm. The full version of the resolutin can be found at www.sutherlandin-stitute.orgimagesnaturalfam-ily.pdf. Some say this is not an issue for the city government and that cities should only focus on the infrastructure of streets and sewers. What good is an infrastructure of streets and sewers if nobody wants to live there? We have to look no further than to the city which hosted this year's SuperBowL Detroit. Detroit may have streets, water wa-ter and sewer infrastructures but it does not have the family infrastructure left. The Associated As-sociated Press recently wrote, "Much of the rest of Detroit is a landscape dotted with burned-out buildings, where liquor stores abound but supermarkets super-markets are hard to come by, and where drugs, violence and unemployment are everyday realities." Without maintaining the family infrastructure you end up losing the tangible infrastructures. infra-structures. Detroit has fired hundreds of city employees in just the last year causing many services to have been cut. This resolution establishes sound public policy based on facts not conjecture. It does not dictate what we do personally person-ally and it does not exclude people based upon what they do in their private lives. Only those seeking to be offended can be offended by a public REALTOR" Custom, Quality Memorials Large Selection of Colors & Styles 374-0580 SI0iMMBi 5" Money Saying Coupons in Sunday's Daily Herald Resolution on The Natural Family: A Vision for (name of city) Whereas, the natural family is the fundamental unit of society and is entitled to protection in Utah by local and state governments; and Whereas, the natural family is the locus of the true common com-mon good and that citizens of (name of city) help ourselves when we help our families; and Whereas, the natural family results in healthier, happier, more productive, and more civically-engaged adults as well as healthier, happier, safer, and better educated children; and Whereas, most serious public pathologies including crime, delinquency, illegal drug use, domestic violence, long-term long-term poverty, and low educational achievement are closely close-ly associated with family breakdown and disorder; then. Be it resolved, that (name of city), Utah, adopts the following follow-ing vision as a guide to policy formation and public action: We envision a local culture that upholds the marriage of a woman to a man, and a man to a woman, as ordained of God. This culture affirms marriage as the best path to health, security, fulfillment, and joy. It casts the home built on marriage as the source of true political sovereignty and ordered liberty. It also holds the household framed by marriage mar-riage to be the primary economic unit, a place marked by rich activity, material abundance, and broad self-reliance. This culture treasures private property in family hands as the rampart of independence and liberty. It celebrates the marital sexual union as the unique source of new human life. We see our homes as open to a full quiver of children, the source of family continuity and social growth. We envision envi-sion young women growing into wives, homemakers, and mothers; and we see young men growing into husbands, home-builders, and fathers. We see true happiness as the product of persons enmeshed en-meshed in vital bonds with spouses, children, parents, and extended family. We look to a landscape of family homes, lawns, and gardens basy with useful tasks and ringing with the laughter of many childrea We envision parents as the first educators of their childrea We see homes that also embrace em-brace extended family members who need special care due to age or infirmity. We view local neighborhoods and communities com-munities as the second locus of political sovereignty. policy document. The resolution details what our vision is, in order to guide our public policy in zoning, city ordinances and other city decisions. By sustaining and supporting the family infrastructure infra-structure we help childrea parents, and our present and future society. To further clarify the resolutioa resolu-tioa it does not define what is or is not a family, it does not say women cannot work, nor does it say you mast have a "quiver of childrea" Those opposed to the resolution purposely pur-posely take phrases out of context con-text to suit their own agenda. The resolution says that "we envision young women grow- . ing into wives, homemakers, and mothers." Some women are successful homemakers who also work. SIEMENS Hearing Aid Authorized Factory Outlet WW- The resolution says that "we see our homes as open to a full quiver of childrea" This means that many children are welcomed wel-comed in our homes whether it is by parents or grandparents and that we see many children as being the good for our future fu-ture and providing a vibrant community. Larger families have been proven to provide the best system sys-tem of taking care of each other oth-er and the parents will be well cared for if the need arises because be-cause there are many children to shoulder the responsibilities. It is time for the tables to be turned; those who do not want to discuss resolutions based on facts are those who are close-minded. close-minded.
