Muehlmann signs with BYU Beky Beaton NORTH COUNTY American Fork football player Mike Muehlmann made it official Feb. 1, as he signed his letter of intent to play football at BYU in the school office with his parents, coach and principal on hand. The senior was a captain for the team this year and played tight end and defensive end at 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds. He was an All-State, All-Valley and All-Region selection and also got some all-star recognition recogni-tion last year as a junior. He led his run-oriental team in receptions with 24 for 280 yards, an average of 11.7 yards per catch, scored four touchdowns and also had some rushing yards. On the defensive side of the ball, he accounted for 33 solo tackles, 45 assisted tackles, one tackle for a loss, 11 sacks, and five hurries. He also caused two fumbles and made one fumble recovery. "He has great speed and hands for a big man," said Caveman football coach Davis Knight. "He played both sides of the ball with skill and speed and was a real force on the field." Muehlmann originally verbally ver-bally committed to Utah, but changed his mind and signed with BYU. "1 love the direction that Bronco Bron-co (Mendenhall) has the program going in and I like how they use their tight ends," Muehlmann said. "The recruits that Bronco has this year are amazing." Muehlmann plans on serving an LDS church mission before enrolling at the university. Rewind Continued from Page 6 looks at the basket. The Cavemen Cave-men pressed for most of the game and forced Spanish Fork into several turnovers and into offensive plays that didn't work. Another key for American Fork was limiting the Dons from beyond the arc. Jace Brinkerhoff hit two long-range bombs and that was all the Dons got. "They have very good guards and our focus was to take away their 3-point shots and 1 thought we did a good job," coach Meacham said. The Cavemen salted away this game by being composed and hitting their free throws 16-for-21). "The end of the game was different. Before we were playing not to lose and now we had that look in our eyes, where the ball wasnt going to be taken from us," said Meacham, talking about the difference between this game and several close losses the Cavemen had earlier in the season. "We went to the line and hit our free throws, and we were still aggressive. "Every guy added something some-thing to this win," the coach continued. "We had some reserve players who haven't played that many varsity minutes min-utes come in and do what was asked. Zach Enosa was a presence pres-ence inside and he hit big free throws for us. Jayce Ross hit a big 3 for us that put us up for good in the third quarter. "David and Austin made great passes off of drives and kicks. Jeff Toone and Mason Porter were again consistent and had some big rebounds for us. It was good to get Kellen Nicol back for our game. 'He had surgery on his hand, and he is our defensive specialist. He is slowly getting back into Fransen to be inducted into AF Sports Legends Hall of Fame NORTH COUNTY Former Caveman Eric Fran-son Fran-son will be inducted into the American Fork Sports Legend Hall of Fame at halftime of next Wednesday's Region 4 boys basketball game against Lone Peak. Franson played in American Fork in 1989-90 and went on to a stellar college career in Logan. He was recently named to the all-century team at Utah State University. It will also be Senior Night for the current Cavemen. All the seniors on this year's team will be recognized before the start of the game. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night. the flow of things. "Brady (Mason) has a great point -guard mentality," Meacham said. "I have to beg him to take shots because he really wants to get others involved. in-volved. He is doing a good job of getting us in our offense and he is defending great. "Our bench was again active and helping with calls of the other's team's plays, and they are helping tis every day in practice as they are improving themselves. Spencer Shumway is leading our JV in scoring and continues to get better. Brandon Beddes and Britt Wells are improving and it's fun to watch their progress. Brandon had 17 rebounds in the last JV game," he added. I Jared Hunsaker and Beky Beaton filed this report. I Feb. 7 Pleasant Grove 56, American Fork 51: The Vikings were able to hold off the determined de-termined Cavemen to take sole possession of first place in Region 4. Trailing 53-51 with 12 seconds sec-onds left in the game, American Ameri-can Fork fouled Jayden Gray and the senior point guard sank both free throws to give Pleasant Grove the win. The Cavemen missed a pair of 3-pointers and Gray was fouled again with one second left . He made one of two free throws to finish off the tally. "Credit Gray. He goes up and hits his free throws," said American Fork coach Doug Meacham. "That was the difference dif-ference in the game. They hit their free throws and we didnt." Neit her team could pull away from the other. Pleasant Grove's biggest lead through three quarters was three points and American Fork's was five points. The Cavemen opened up a 39-34 lead after Mckay Frand-sen Frand-sen pulled down an offensive rebound, was fouled and sank both free throws. But by the end of the third quarter, the Vikings had cut the lead to 41-40. A pair of Haws free throws tied the game at 47 with 2:42 to play, but foul shots helped Pleasant Grove maintain its lead.
