If felt it wa right Us kill Bogg, he'd do it, rardls yf the law. And Vort ffclt like he could really drt it. N7t only had he learned how Ui ue hi mumpon, but even more important, he had found vein of courage in himself that earlier had not txren there. Port continued to ride by the Boggt home, several time a week. Though he never aw Boggs daring the day, occasionally he would see the e -governor reading in the parlor in the early evening, either before or after supper, Boggs read a pap f every night, and he did it near a front window, Shooting the man would be easy. Port began to get the feeling that perhaps the Lord was delivering the old enemy into his hands. Though he still wasn't sure he would do it, Port began the necessary neces-sary preparations. First, he thought that shooting through gtass might cause deflection of the bullet, perhaps enough to miss, perhaps not. With buckshot there would be less chance of missing. On the other hand, he wouldn't want to be seen carrying a shotgun through town. He needed a pistol large enough to handle a large load of buckshot, and 'deliver it with enough force to take a man's head off. Port didn't own such a gun, so he began visiting the several gun shops in town, being careful to introduce in-troduce himself as Brown whenever when-ever someone war,ted to know his name. Finally, in a little gun shop fn the older part of town, Port discovered discov-ered the right weapon. It was a heavy Qerman horse pistol, one of the new repeating pistols tha t held four rounds. If he missed the first time, the pistol would provide three additional opportunities to kill the ex-governor. Port k new better than to buy the pistoLThatcouldcastsuspicionhis way after the shooting, Noticing a broken lock over one of the windows, win-dows, Port broke into the shop late one night and stole the German horse pistol. The following week, the newspapers mentioned the missing pistol, placing the blame on some strange Negro slaves that had been seen in town that night. Port hid the gun deep in a grain barrel at Ward's barn. Weeks passed, Luana had her baby, another little girl. But Port wasn't around much, Luana was glad her man was hard at work earning money. It didn't occur to her that something else was on his onpr, a. mm Winter gave way to spring, and spring was becoming summer. It was time to return to Nauvoo. If crops weren't planted soon, there would be no hope of a fall harvest, Luana was eager to return. And the year fn which Joseph prophesied f Joggs would experience the violent death had nearly passed. Port was getting more anxious every day. Joseph had not told him to do it. Neither had the Lord answered an-swered his prayers. Yet, Boggx deserved todie asmuch as any man living, thought Port. And if someone some-one else wasn't going to do it, then maybe he should. An opportunity like this would never present itself again. lie knew he could count on Boggs reading in front of the parlor window nearly every night. The German horse pistol was the perfect per-fect weapon. Was the Lord delivering deliver-ing the ex-governor into Port's hands, end Portdidn'thave enough faith to see it?
