The octafinal battle saw a sloppy performance by both teams. Together, they made 43 turnovers in the thriller. The game did not improve im-prove for the Cavewomen until the final quarter. True, they did lead early in the game. After a free throw by Piper Manuela put American Fork on the board first, Christina Allred sank a jump shot that made the score 3-0. At that point, the Lepoards came alive. Two free throws by Melissa Grant put them up 4-3, but East did not stay ahead for long. Two straight buckets by junior Michelle Savage put American Fork back out in front 7-4. At that point, American Fork's three-point lead evaporated as the Cavewomen took to missing shots and making turnovers. tur-novers. In the meantime, a jumper by Erin Fitzgerald put East up by 8-7. 8-7. Taking a 10-7 lead into Period 2, the Lepoards sought to turn American Fork's dry spell into a lopsided win for them. They came very close to doing that. But after the Cavewomen found themselves down 7-14, senior Michelle Hendry let them a helping hand with an assist to sophomore Julie Trane, resulting in a three-point three-point play which ended the American Fork dry spell. Following Trane's three-point play, teammate Paige Robinson sank five straight free throws, which Cavewoman Coach Ann Johnson said, "kept us in the game." Robinson's heyday at the line put American Fork within 18-17. She would have tied the score at 18, if she had not missed a second free throw just before halftime. In the second half, turnovers kept the Cavewomen from taking over he lead. Midway through the third period, senior guard Koreen Paxman put American Fork up 23-22. Her shot boosted the Cavewomen's morale.
