"Targets, How to Set Goals For Yourself and Reach Them," written by Dr. Leon Tec, aIso author of "The Fear of Success"), deals with a problem most of us experience in varying degrees throughout our lives .- procrastination and inertia. Tec defines targeting as the "ability to direct behavior to recognized, predetermined objectives. ob-jectives. He believes many of the psychologists problems that beset so many of us today have their roots in our technical inability to deal effectively ef-fectively with our everyday lives. We seem unable to set goals and reach them, thus setting ourselves up for disappointment, frustration and eroding our self esteem. Of course, we all get sidetracked on occasion, but when we consistently fail to reach our goals then we need to take a hard look at ourselves. For most of us the ability is there but the strategies for using our ability eludes us. Tec outlines strategies for (1) getting started (2) setting priorities (3) overcoming mental blocks (4) avoiding diversions (5) doing more in less time (6) doing things you don't like to do (7) digging in and staying with it. Targeting in and of itself does not assure success; suc-cess; ability and knowledge are necessary. Objectives Ob-jectives must be realistic and keyed to available resources. "All targets begin as intentions ... but an intention only becomes a target when it assumes certain properties." Tac gives us the guidelines for hitting the bull's eye. Chapter by Chapter he provides the guidelines - importance of writing it down, taking steps that will compel us to concentrate on a specific goal. Target practice is outlined as well as sequencing, scheduling, analyzing and keeping tabs. In the final analysis targeting is the management of your most valuable resource -yourself. And with the information Dr. Tec presents, managing yourself becomes easier because you will have learned so much about yourself through the tests and exercises within the covers of "Targets."
