Show Citizen - Thursday, February 4. Scott Durfey and Stanford Reid are in Washington D.C. this week as representatives of the Alpine School District and American Fork High in learning first hand the back-stage workings of national government. Scott is studentbody president at the high school; Mr. Reid is an American History teacher. They are participating in the "Close-Up" program - a private sponsored program to help students and their advisors learn more about the procedures in government. They left American Fork on Sunday morning and will return this Saturday. Mrs. Reid also accompanied ac-companied them on the trip. Mr. Reid said the two are among 190 students and advisors from throughout Utah who made the trip. They join others from throughout the nation, and will be paired with students and advisors from other places in order to give them a view point from other areas. During the week, students participate in 12 to 15 seminars, each with a different speaker. They meet in workshops to discuss issues and the day's events ; and attend topical seminars which focus on a political, economic or social issue. A tour early in the program week introduced them to Washington, seat of government, and Washington, home of more than 750,000 residents; and to take a breather from total immersion in ' government, students go to a play or show for a night on the town, eat at a local pizza parlor and conclude the week with a banquet and dance. They also spend a day or two on Capitol Hill where they meet with the Utah delegation to Washington. Transportation for Mr. Reid and Scott was paid for by the Close Up Foundation, with Mrs. Reid paying her own way to accompany them. This is the first year Alpine School District has been invited to participate in the program, it was noted. It is hoped the invitation will be expanded next year to allow more students and advisors to take part in the experience. Scott is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Evan Durfey, and a senior at American Fork High School. Intermountain Giftmakers Factory Outlet Now open . . .
