Literally. Still, co-authoring a textbwk for roofers is only one of the many things Anderson said he has done in the 30-plus years he's been in the roofing business. busi-ness. He currently owns three roofing related businesses: Anderson An-derson Associates, TRA Snow Brackets and TRA -Mage, all based in American Fork. He started Anderson Associates Associ-ates in 1991, with his main customer cus-tomer being The Church of Jesus Je-sus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I le coasulted and inspected some of the tile nxfs, old and new, installed on churches and stake centers. "During that time I began noting not-ing the damages (to the roofs) in snow areas," Anderson said. "I felt bad, because I was the one that sold them on tile nxjfs, and I didn't know how to correct cor-rect it." I le said no one in the U.S. roofing industry at the time could give him the answers he wanted. So Anderson said he left for research trips to England, Eng-land, Norway, Germany and Austria. "I had people in the roofing roof-ing industry (in each country) show me around, and I saw a different way to do things. In America, we're not taking care of the problem," he said. To deal with snow piling on nx)ftops, he said most people use the zig zag heat tape to melt the snow at the eaves. "That's not the right way to approach the problem," Anderson Ander-son said. "It's dangerous." In higher elevations, rooftops roof-tops also experience an avalanche ava-lanche effect, where the heat in the house rises and warms the snow, and large chunks of snow slide off onto landscaping, cars and sometimes people. The sliding snow also destroys the rxf tops, ripping up shingles and vertical piping fixtures on its descent, Anderson said he found that instead of melting the snow and allowing this damage to happen, hap-pen, roofers in Europe retained the snow, with snow brackets or snow fences attached directly di-rectly to the roof. I le said this is safer and can be beneficial in helping the home retain the heat within, Anderson quickly got to work engineering and patenting patent-ing a pnxiuct for the U.S., patterned pat-terned after the type he saw in Europe. His snow brackets, simply, are thin flat pieces of copper or steel that form a small triangle at one end. Strategically Stra-tegically attached to specific places on the roof, the brackets hold the snowpack, allowing a more natural melting. Through a grant, he partnered part-nered with BYU's engineering department to test his brackets to find their final fail points. After hundreds of lab tests, he said he made accurate, easy -to-read charts showing the snow load versus the rwrf slope, and how many snow brackets are needed to safely retain the snow. If roofers follow the installation specifications, specifica-tions, it works great," Anderson Ander-son said. Just last year he said his business increased by 40 percent. Resorts in Colorado, Canada, back East, and even here in Park City now sport some form of the brackets or fences. He recently shipped 16,(XX) brackets to a Lake Tahoe resort, and the 6,000 sitting in his warehouse will s(X)n be on their way to Sun Valley, Idaho. After all this, he said he still wasn't satisfied. This "cold rx)f system" made a lot of sense to him. In this type of system, an even temperature tem-perature is maintained between the roof and attic, through ventilation ven-tilation on the nx)f deck. So he partnered last year with the (Jerman company MAGE, a Euroxan leader in this business, TRA-Mage was formed manufacturing ventilated venti-lated flashing out of corrugated aluminum, which seals the rxf, while leaving area for air to move through to equalize the temperature.
