Richard K. Sharp, MD The leaves are changing color, the kids are (finally) back in school and there is snow on the mountains. What conclusion can we draw from this? What else but that it is getting closer to the annual flu (influenza) season, which typically runs from about November to April each year. The annual dreaded runny nose, cough, fever, achy muscles and bones flu. It seems about as inevitable as death and taxes. Is there no hope for getting through a winter without all this? Happily it rums out there is: the (mostly unappreciated) flu vaccine. If the flu is usually just a week of abject misery, why bother to get vaccinated? Influenza can actually be a serious seri-ous disease that is expected to lead to about 20,000 deaths this year in the USA alone. Ok, to be vaccinated is a good thing but who should be immunized? immu-nized? Virtually anyone interested interest-ed in reducing their chances of getting sick with the flu, as long as they are at least 6 months old and have no reason they should not be immunized (such as a previous serious allergic reaction to the vaccine). Generally this includes all persons 65 and older and anybody with a condition in footba" feam P'0 fimpvie hme at 4 p.m.; sophomores play at Timpview qt 4 p.m. Cedar Hills City Cedar Hills will be having a "Meet the Candidate' night at 7 p.m. at Cedar Ridge Elementary School. For example: residents of nursing homes or chronic care facilities, those with chronic heart or lung problems (including asthma), chronic metabolic disorders such as diabetes, kidney disease, immunosuppression immuno-suppression from transplants or medications, and women who will be in their second or third trimester during the influenza season. This list should also include health care workers in close contact with these high-risk groups, including employees of nursing home and chronic care facilities. Family members mem-bers of persons in these high risk groups, HIV positive people, travelers travel-ers and students should also think strongly about immunization. The only real contraindication to immunization immu-nization is an anaphylactic (severely (severe-ly allergic) reactions to eggs or to other components of the influenza vaccine. What is the difference between the flu and a cold? Colds mostly cause symptoms centered around the head or nose such as congestion, sneezing, a cough and a mild sore throat. Influenza typically comes with fever, cough, chills, sore throat, headache and muscle aches, in other words, total body misery. Will the flu vacone help prevent the flu? You bet, but' unfortunately it doesn't help with the common cold. Does it guarantee that you won't get the flu? Unfortunately no, there are too many strains out there to get 100 percent guaranteed protections against them all. The vaccine tries to hit the strains that appear to be most likely in this current year. This is why vaccination vaccina-tion in previous year's isn't good forever, it is usually a different variety vari-ety each time around. But even if The Dan Peterson School for the multiply multi-ply disabled will hold a fund raising Halloween Carnival, with games, drawings draw-ings and dinner. There will be an opportunity the shot you get doesn't cover this years strain entirely and you do get sick, people who get vaccinated vac-cinated do seem to have milder cases than those who skipped the immunization. What are the risks? A lot of people peo-ple will get some mild reaction, such as redness, soreness or swelling where they got the shot. A few will get a low grade fever and some aches. That sounds just like the flu, you say. That's true, but these result from your immune system fighting what it thinks is an infection, so it is prepared when you are exposed to the real disease. Most of these symptoms are very mild and only last a day or so. The viruses in the vaccine are killed, so you cannot get influenza influen-za from the vaccine, but they do fool your immune system into preparing for the real thing. A few people will have a more serious reaction, including an allergic reaction. If that were to happen, you should contact or get to a doctor right away. The vaccine, by the way, takes a couple cou-ple of weeks to really have you ready to fight off the flu, so it's best to get it early so you don't end up getting sick before you have a chance to get prepared. The best time is October or November. Contact your personal person-al physician or the Utah County Health Department is operating an adult immunization hotline, (370-8738), to help residents locate the nearest immunization site. The IHC-Highland Health Center is currently offering immunization. They accept most insurances. to address the board at the beginning of the meeting.
