This great American, who determined the destiny of this nation during the Revolution, Revolu-tion, possessed a character of which we may well be proud. His courage,' detennination, fortitude, wisdom and resourcefulness were virtues necessary for the great responsibilities which he carried. To us has fallen the task of perpetuating perpetuat-ing the government and the nation which he was so largely instrumental in founding. Anderson, Traffic.Manager. 1 Since the nost war liquidation per lad, with its disastrous results la 1920, the financing ot livestock paper has changed considerably from the prac tice of many years before that time. The old plan of financing livestock through local banks was reasonably satisfactory until the shock of 1920 rtea-thft ..demaiuls-ot-4enosltoi!i,on banks reauired them to call In their loans, which forced millions of head rr iiMatnrV fh market, nushlng the supply far past the saturation point with the results with which we are l.n familiar. This was no fault of the banks or loan companies as the banks depended upon their depositors for the funds to carry the loans, and when the depositors called upon them for their money they had no alterna tive but to extract It from their bor rowers, - which caused, a collapse In the livestock Industry, particularly In beef cattle. Before 1920 the Federal Land Banks were functioning and farmers . could , secure funds from them on first farm j mortages, but loans ot this character have been used to a very small ex tent to purchase livestock. In fact, the i "figures show that less than z per-cent per-cent of these loans went Into live stock channels, that about two-thirds of the money loaned In this way was secured to pay off mortgages, 9 per cent went into improvements ana about IS percent to pay current debts. An interesting feature is that only about 1 percent of these loans was used by farmers to purchase more land. For this reason, owing to the svstem being too cumDersome livestock financing, the Federal Land Bank has been very little used tor that purpose and with the demonstra tion of short time locai.Dann iu. in 1920 for operations covering long Deriods. the need for some other med. ium for livestock financing was seen. The need seems to-be "fairly well filled in the form of the Intermediate Credit Bank coming out of the Inter mediate Credit Act in 1923. In the four years ot operations of this system, sys-tem, over one-half billion dollars has been advanced to loan companies and other agencies handling livestock loans. These agencies, of courseact ing as the medium through which the producer deals with the Intermediate Credit Bank! , Prior to the coming of the Redls counfBank, the local bank loaned the livestock producer money largely on the basis of feeding operations. These loans were made for six monthaper- lods with an understanding that they would be renewed it conditions Justl were not Justified, the results were apparent T This was particularly true of range loans on livestock. Tht situation Is changing to a considerable extent due to the grow lng trend toward feed lot operations. tock handled In this way represent, lng a security for either bank or loan company which ia unsurpassed hy any'otbeif wmm'daTfy, belhg7" as It is, virtually as safe as a warehoused product with the added feature of be. lng one of the few1 commodities which mar be turned into cash any day should tha necessity arise.
