Friends and Fellow Class Mates: Little, do wo realize wnat a difficult yet delicate undertaking we have accepted ac-cepted unto ourselveH. when we stand before our easel, take our brush ia hand, and begin tlnrlux our "Life's Sky." It 1h a difficult tank to ' tin!" alnce niont of us lire born "daubers." It is a delicate tank since it requires a'rfeet conception of color, tone, and -value A knowledge of this Color conception concep-tion Is most vital because each of us has a "Life's Sky" to tint. And If we would do our tinting .-gloriously like unto a sunrise o'er the mighty and majestic Tlnipanogos, we must develop de-velop a delicate and refined taste loi color, tone and intensity. From the myriad tints of the ruin bow we are permitted to make our selection of those hues which are most fitting for our purpose. No matter what colors we nu choose later, we must , let the foundation foun-dation of our life, and the background of our "Life's Sky" be white, the symbol of purity and virtue. Purity denotes fur more than superficial super-ficial cleanliness. Virtue raises us above our hopes, fears and chances. A pure and virtuous character goes far beneath the surface of guarded speech and manners. It penetrates u the very heart of being. To be pure and virtuous Is to be in accord with one nf the fundamental principles of youth. Tennyson, said: "My strength U as the strength of two because my heart Is pure." Purity and virtue af feet our success In life by strengthen tig oijr energy and vitality, by raising our standards and Ideals, and by' fur the ring our hopes and our ambitious back- Only when such a stainless ground Is ours are we readj- tlntlnx with those pigments most at tractive, most glorious and most harmonious. har-monious. If we would do this, we must first dab our .brush into the crimson, the emblem of honor and courage; then Into the.-blue, the emblem of self-reliance self-reliance and loyalty. We choose crimson first, perhaps, because it is the dominant color, a color which represents-the courage of our daily accomplishments, both large and small. Even in its most sophisticated dealings with city life, Miss Ferber's story the. most successful suc-cessful American novel of 1924 is redolent of the soil; and alive with the beauty of green' fields and the charm of fair landscapes. The most vivid story of the Middle West i, during the last quarter of the Nineteenth and the first quarter of the Twentieth centuries that can be found in American literature. Everyone Can Read It as a Serial in IN THIS PAPER, STARTING THIS ISSUE. Hut courage Isn't a brilliant dash A daring deed In a moment's flash. It Isn't an Instantaneous thing Born of despair with a sudden spring It isn't a creature of flickered hope On the final tug on a slipping rope..' It's something deep in the soul of man That Is work Ihg always to serve some plan, It's a slow, unwavering, inborn trait. With the patience to work and the strength to wait. Courage Is more than a daring deed It's the breath of life and the strong man's creed." However essentia) we may feel that our "Life's Sky" be streaked with crimson, it is not complete' until it is softened and subdued by broad blue strokes of self-reliance and loyalty Self-reliance can be obtained by hav in explicit faith in one's- self. We can be loyal to home by being truly re presentative of the truths and ideals established there. Loyal to friends by holding their friendship sacred. Loyal to faith by being courageous enoutrh to uphold the standards of that faith Loyal to country by protecting and sustaining the Ideals for which our American "Flag stands. And loyal to question. And yet. a sky of crimson, white and blue alone would be undesirable because it would be too Haming, too glaring. To make our sky truly representative repre-sentative of real life, we must add to it that which will do for it, what the "wash." does for the artist's finished painting, or what the gray clouds do for the amber dawn. We must "wash" our Life's Sk with the somber grays of sympathy tenderness and sorrow which for our purposes we may term benevolences. These shades of gray properly brushed into our sky of crimson, white and blue will make it glow with warmth and light; thus giving it the desired effect. Thus sunshine and shadow nail laughter and tears These are forever the paints of the years. Splashed on the canvas of life day by day. YA'e are the artists, the colors are they. We are the painters, the pigments we use. Never we're wholly permitted to choose. Grief with its gray tint and Joy with Its red. Comes from life's tubes to be blended and spread. Here at the easel, the brushes aLhand, Kach for a time Is permitted to stand. White was the canvas when first we began. Ready to picture the life of a man.. Now1 we are splashing the "pigments about, , Knowing the reds and the blues w ill I give out Soon we must turn to the dull hues and gray, fainting the sorrows that darken the way. Now with the sunshine and now with the shade Slowly and surely the picture Is made. Even the gray tints with beauty may glow-Recalling glow-Recalling the joy of the lost long ago Let me not daub It with doubt and despair 1 Deeds that are hasty unkind and an- But when the last drop of plgmnet Is dried '.
