Lo que motivó el evento fue la recaudación de fondos para el “Programa de Liderazgo Unidos Saldre- mos Adelante” (USALP) y poder pagar el costo de varias conferencias de liderazgo para estudiantes latinos en el país, según explicaron los organizadores. Cuando un evento parece poco predecible, es importante demostrar lo opuesto y sorprender al público con algo emocionante. En esta ocasión se notó que los organizadores pusieron mucho empeño en el planeamiento de la fiesta. Este esfuerzo conjunto entre los grupos latinos de UVU fue admirable y valió la pena por la cantidad de personas que asistieron a este evento: Marcos Hernández, presidente adjunto del programa, dijo que se esperaba una asistencia mucho mayor que la de 400 del año pasado; sin embargo, la también presidenta adjunta Tuare Garrido indicó que la cifra se duplicó con las más de 850 personas que acudieron al even- to del 7 de octubre. Este grupo está compuesto por estudiantes latinos que participan en varios eventos bailando ritmos como la salsa, el merengue, la bachata, el tango y la cumbia para promover la cultura latina. El grupo se fundó en el otoño de 2009; su director de coreografía José Santiago comenta el impacto muy fuerte que este grupo tiene, dentro y afuera de la universidad: “Este club tiene mucho talento y muchos deseos de salir adelante y poder hacer una gran diferencia en la universidad y en la comunidad. De hecho, estamos planeando visitar a Japón el próximo año para demostrar nuestra cultura y poner en alto el nombre de la universidad”. USALP se formó hace dos años en UVU con el nombre de Latinoamérica Club y con el apoyo de Marcelina Zamora; ahora se le conoce como USALP. La 6 - ¿qué va a ser de mí? Agustín Díaz, consejero de USALP y ex alumno de UVU, se ha involucrado en el club desde que era estudiante y se dio cuenta del poder que tiene el club de motivar a los estudiantes de secundaria. El junto a otros miembros del club hacía visitas a las escuelas preparatorias y hablaban con los estudiantes acerca de seguir estudiando, de echarle ganas para poder ir ala universidad y crear un mejor futuro para ellos y sus familias. Desde entonces, Díaz ha ayudado para que más estudiantes se involucren y sean mentores de excelencia y liderazgo. La educación, capital social » Díaz tiene su propia opinión del porqué la mayoría de latinos no van a la universidad y muchos ni se gradúan de la preparatoria: “Hay varias razones... pero la más grande y más ignorada, yo creo, es que no tienen capital social. Esto es: cuando los padres o abuelos ya han asistido a la universidad, entonces los hijos o nietos ya saben que ellos también irán”. Y agrega: “Los padres ya saben de becas, préstamos y todo lo que se necesita para asistir a la universidad y el enfoque está en el estudio. Muchos latinos no tienen este capital y es por eso que no le dan prioridad, cuando deberían de poner mas enfoque para cambiar su situación.” El mismo habla acerca de lo difícil que fue para él poder salir adelante por encima de las estadísticas, ya que sus padres tampoco asistieron a la universidad. Sin embargo, esa fue una razón suficiente para que decidiera graduarse y recibir una licenciatura el año pasado, ahora espera obtener una maestría dentro de dos años. Otra razón por la cual Díaz se ha involucrado en USALP es poder ayudar a aquellos que quieren salir adelante, pero que no saben como lograrlo. El club tiene tres enfoques muy importantes para los estudiantes: académico, social y político. De acuerdo con Díaz, los tres son muy importantes para que los latinos encuentren el equilibrio necesario entre la educación y los problemas sociales y políticos. “Estamos integrando a los estudiantes a la comunidad y la transición a la educación superior sin perder el orgullo por su cultura y tradiciones porque es muy importante que se adhieran a sus raíces”, dijo Díaz. ración ante la adversidad.
