ALAM LULE Ahora Utah A partir de julio, la Oficina de Educación del Estado de Utah supervisará nuevos programas de enseñanza de doble inmersión en las escuelas primarias del estado. Esto debido a una iniciativa del gobernador Jon Huntsman Jr. de apoyar y promover la educación de los niños en dos idiomas. Uno de los primeros distritos escolares que arrancará con dicho programa es el Distrito Escolar de Canyons, en el cual las escuelas primarias de Alta View, Draper, Lone Peak y Oak Hollow contarán con programas en español, francés y mandarín-chino. “El gobernador Huntsman, quien es un gran impulsor del aprendizaje de otros idiomas, dio un subsidio de seis años. Tres de nuestras escuelas solicitaron esos subsidios, y los ganaron”, indicó Tamra Baker, responsable del Programa de Doble Inmersión del Distrito Escolar de Canyons. Baker recalcó la importancia de tener lo que ella llamó “ciudadanos globales”, a lo que explicó que es necesario que los futuros egresados de esta nueva generación de estudiantes sean bilingües o políglotas para poder tener éxito en el mundo laboral del futuro. Dijo que ese es el objetivo de tener un programa de doble inmersión. “Los niños necesitan aprender inglés para ser exitosos. Estamos buscando tener doble inmersión en donde niños que hablan español puedan aprender inglés teniendo niños que hablan inglés en su clase”, señaló Baker, “y los niños que hablan inglés como primera lengua, tienen niños que hablan español; así se pueden beneficiar hablando los dos idiomas juntos”. Otra característica de di- cho programa es que, además de contar con niños de uno u otro idioma como lengua nativa, cuentan con profesores cuya lengua materna es la que se va a enseñar. Baker indicó que se han esforzado en tener profesores que hablan español como primer idioma para que su acento pueda ser claro y natural y de esta manera los niños puedan aprenderlo. La responsable del programa dijo que están trabajando arduamente con las escuelas secundarias y preparatorias para que puedan darles seguimiento a los alumnos cuando estos avancen a dichos niveles educativos. Jeffrey P. Haney, director asociado de Comunicación del Distrito Escolar de Canyons, indicó que, como institución, se espera que en el futuro dicho programa pueda expandirse a más escuelas y a otros distritos escolares. También dijo que para Canyons es muy importante que se inicie con dicho programa, ya que cuentan con una gran población de estudiantes provenientes de grupos minoritarios que representan el 82.5 por ciento de su población estudiantil. Haney reconoció además que la mayor cantidad de estudiantes latinos con la que cuentan está concentrada en la ciudad de Midvale. El éxito de este programa, que apenas comenzará en el otoño del 2009, ha sido inesperado, ya que actualmente las escuelas pertenecientes al Distrito Escolar de Canyons y que participan en los programas de doble inmersión mandarín-chino cuentan ya con una lista de espera. Sin embargo, la escuela Alta View, en donde se impartirá el programa en español, cuenta todavía con algunos lugares vacantes. Los programas de doble inmersión han sido aplicados desde hace aproximadamente 20 años en estados como Oregon y Minesota. Dichos programas tienen la característica particular de que, en el periodo de clases, 50 por ciento del tiempo la enseñanza es en inglés y el otro 50 por ciento en español. LARA Ahora Utah En un marco caracterizado por la diversidad étnica, con música, bailables y comida étnica, el Centro de Instrucción y Entrenamiento Horizonte de la ciudad de Salt Lake dio cabida a más de 200 personas que asistieron a la apertura del proyecto de expansión de los Centros de Bienvenida para Inmigrantes y Refugiados. Durante el evento se presentó un programa que contó tanto con la presencia y discursos del alcalde del Condado de Salt Lake Peter Corroon como de la alcaldesa de la Ciudad de Midvale JoAnn B. Seghini, quienes coincidieron en enfatizar la importancia de la presencia de las comunidades étnicas en el desarrollo del estado. “En vista de que el estado de Utah es considerado un estado para refugiados, la integración e incorporación de inmigrantes y refugiados a la comunidad es muy importante”, enfatizó Corroon. La expansión de los Centros de Bienvenida es un proyecto coordinado en conjunto por United Way de la ciudad de Salt Lake y la recaudación de fondos y donación de un millón de dólares por parte de la organización Red Filantrópi- ca de Mujeres (WPN, por sus siglas en inglés), la cual está formada por mujeres de diferentes sectores gubernamentales, educativos y profesionales que donan su tiempo y recursos para “crear cambios positivos y a largo tiempo en la comunidad”, según indicó Paula Green Johnson, directora de la mesa directiva de dicha organización. Los centros proporcionan servicios a inmigrantes y refugiados, creando oportunidades para que todos los miembros de la comunidad unan sus esfuerzos mientras se construyen comunidades más fuertes. Estos centros desempeñan el papel de puentes entre los nuevos habitantes de la comunidad con los recursos disponibles a su servicio. “El objetivo es asegurar que su proceso de adaptación sea más fácil y productivo”, aseguró Green Johnson, de WPN. “La iniciativa de expansión de estos centros tiene como objetivo proporcionar servicios en las áreas de educación, ingreso, salud y compromiso cívico, así como oportunidades para que se incorporen a la sociedad en general en manera productiva”, señaló Sabrina Morales, de la Coalición para la Integración de Inmigrantes y Refugiados en Utah (UIRIC, por sus siglas en inglés). y el Padre Omar Ontiveros te invitan a: ALAM LULE | AHORA UTAH Por su parte Deborah S.
