La ceremonia se llevó a cabo en dos etapas debido a la cantidad tan grande de personas que participó; en cada una se entregaron 750 certificados. La señora María de los Ángeles Bates, argentina de nacimiento quien llegó al país desde 1999 y después de ser residente por casi diez años, logró obtener su ciudadanía. “Desde un principio yo sabía que si iba a vivir en este país, era obvio que tenía que ser ciudadana. Ahora estoy muy contenta, este es un país de oportunidades y me ha dado muchas cosas desde que llegué aquí”, comentó Bates. Otro caso es el del señor Carlos Moreno, de origen mexicano que llegó a los Estados Unidos desde 1990. “Fue difícil el proceso pero valió la pena, se siente de maravilla, es lo más hermoso, es lo mejor que pude haber he- cho. Cuando recibí mi certificado me dieron ganas de llorar de la emoción. Mi familia está feliz, yo era el único que faltaba de mis hermanos y ahora sigue hacer la petición por mi esposa”, dijo Moreno. Por su parte la señora Ana Carolina Banks, peruana de nacimiento, llegó al país en 1999 con el sueño de tener una mejor calidad de vida, casada con un ciudadano americano, obtuvo su ciudadanía en esta ceremonia. “Tomó tiempo hacerme ciudadana después de todo el proceso que uno tiene que hacer, pero finalmente se logró. Siento que ahora voy a tener un poco más de libertad de hacer las cosas que necesito, aunque ya estoy muy agradecida por las oportunidades que ya tengo en este país. Con esto me voy a sentir más parte de la cultura de mi esposo”, señaló Banks. De acuerdo con información del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional (DHS, por sus siglas en inglés), esta es la primera vez que se naturaliza a tantas personas el mismo día. Los oficiales de dicha institución tomaron la determinación de hacerlo de esta manera debido a que el número de solicitudes ha incrementado considerablemente. Tan solo el pasado año fiscal, el Servicio de Inmigración y Ciudadanía de los Estados Unidos (USCIS, por sus siglas en inglés), de- pendencia derivada del DHS, recibió un millón 400 mil solicitudes de personas que buscan convertirse en ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos. María Elena García, portavoz del USCIS, explicó que debido al número tan grande de solicitudes recibidas se han realizado ceremonias como esta en las que se concentra a una cantidad mayor de personas, comparado con ceremonias anteriores. “Regularmente se entrega un promedio de 400 certificados cada dos meses, pero esta vez necesitábamos hacerlo así debido a la cantidad tan grande de solicitudes que recibimos en el año fiscal pasado”, comentó García. Añadió que las ceremonias masivas que se han realizado en ciudades como Denver, Los Ángeles, Del Río, Phoenix y en la ciudad de Salt Lake servirán como punta de lanza para seguir adelante con este tipo de eventos. Y dijo que como agencia es un gran orgullo poder recibir a nuevos ciudadanos. “Las personas que tomaron su ciudadanía son personas que entraron legales al país y que han portado una tarjeta de residencia por algunos años. Estamos orgullosos de que hayan logrado su sueño pues es derecho de cada persona hacerlo y es algo que ellos querían. Estamos orgullosos como agencia de tener más nuevos ciuda- En medio de alegría, baile, comida, trajes típicos y mucha calidez se llevó a cabo la celebración de Independencia de Chile en Payson, la cual contó con una asistencia de aproximadamente 350 personas de acuerdo a Niki Biscupovich, presidente de la Asociación Chilena. Los chilenos recordaron su país y sus tradiciones disfrutando de los juegos para niños, bailes tradicionales, además de un concurso de cuenca chilena (baile tradicional). La celebración fue organizada por los representantes de la Asociación Chilena, con el deseo de que sus connacionales pudieran disfrutar en familia del festejo. Niki Biscupovich señaló que el objetivo fue reunir a sus connacionales además de celebrar la Independencia. “Esta celebración es un evento importantísimo para recordar no solo la Independencia de Chile, es una celebración que al mismo tiempo nos permite tener parte de nuestra cultura, de poder reunirnos, de poder bai- danos en nuestro país”, puntualizó García. Entre los asistentes había gran alegría por la celebración, con un gran respeto hacia sus tradiciones. Me hace recordar mucho de mi familia y me gusta porque viví casi 40 años en Chile”, comentó Elgueta. Agregó que es un poco difícil transmitir a los hijos las tradiciones chilenas, sobre todo cuando han adoptado la cultura americana, pero aseguró que él sigue trabajando en eso. y por lo tanto, el trámite de ciudadanía también. “Esta es la única manera en la que podremos desahogar la cantidad tan grande que tenemos de solicitudes”, finalizó García.
