Show ROAD HOUSE CLOSED BY ORDER OF COURT perhaps one of th the e most drastic actions wai e ever er filed in our courts here wafe instituted recent L L I 1 ly when county count attorney la layton applied to the district court for a wyit writ of injunction with abatement against martin clahan agahan and Ms liis associates who rave nave been opi operating rating and running ning what is some times termed vernied at north salt a blind pig lake from t alie be first day of march u until antil tile the commence commencement ment of this I 1 action county officials had sever altames al times raided the road house with a view of ultimately closing the same the first of these raids occurred on the etli of march of this year at which time consider able whiskey and other intoci and several cants were found prominent people of salt lake r 1 justice of the ay iy uj peace irvin JP fisher fishe r and put under bail none of 0 these people the cases an and 1 appeared to fight their bail was forfeited harry wilson vilson whose true name ia 31 johnson with tony harry wheeler both of saloon fame in salt lake C city ity who were were in charge of the place that night appeared and contested the action and were irined on the day of march of oilier raid brought this year an another forth inore more intoxicants and martin calahan rede received ived a fine for ope operating ratin a lintel without a license but the most notable case of any emanating emina ting from the road house was the case of the state of utah vs harry johnson a statutory charge 7 ai ar rising out of an assault and battery on one mand aland dolores delores dark clark which occurred on april first this perhaps aroused more apathy against this place than any thin thing else the evidence revealed things of great value in the prosecution se Re of the recent injunction proceedings later raids revealed little of special value from the standpoint of the amount of intoxicant taken the reason bein being that these people were now up making the cache harder to find and again if too much were taken it meant considerable loss to the house the most not notable able feature was the evidence secured by the sheriff and county attorney while the recent trial was in in progress s at that time a bottle of whiskey was purchased at this house county attorney L 1 I layton says that nothing more difficult could have arisen lie ile was rather loath to proceed under the statute which was finally invoked to the closing g of this place as that is perhaps the most drastic statute on the books there is litle doubt he says but what ahat every effort was made by the sheriffs office and by other officials to accomplish this but it appears that the men who wha were operating the road house had absolutely no regard for the law for this reason we finally determined upon clodin closing the place by injunction in order to continue the business a club was organized under the state liw law whereby we were forced to deal with the club |
