Build-I' Build-I' inga-aro going up on nil sides. Survey-Kj Survey-Kj ors. tMiginoors. rnilroiid laborers, car-si car-si pouters, m.'isons and contractors ore l hard at work making a oily on the new I Townsite which adjoins the sito of the jj beautiful, quiet little town, while up jjj on the mountainside (o the cast the 8 work on tlic smelter plant is being Sj rushed as fast as material can be j; brought. It was a scene of busy- ac-j ac-j tivity that greeted the eyes of a pari' I of newspaper men who visited the new i' town and smelter silo -one dny last l week. 'jl' The company which is behind this W1 enterprise, which picked this site for i :l smelter, evidently believes that what 1 1 i-5 worth doing at .all is worth' doing quickly and well. It hns been scarcely two months since a sale of town' lots I was held in Tooele, and alroady a city h has been mapped out and is in a fair s way to be realized. Tents and tempo-A tempo-A rary structures have been 'erected to house the laborers and to feed them lis while- they- aro rushing to completion U hotels, rooming bouses, mercantile es-j es-j tablishments, places of business, a new l theater and residences by the score. !i Everyone is working. Hero a . gang of I j men are excavating.; ovor there- they. will come the .power house, and below this the smelter building proper, with its converters and furnaces. The big power house is to bo 2-10 by Si feet. Work on it is now progressing. The foundation is practically complete'. It is of solid concrete, and through the center is a double row of solid concrete con-crete stanchions. A temporary substation, sub-station, 50 by 30 feet in dimensions, tho plant. When the power .plant is running power will bo generated' from the waste heal from tho roverberatorv furnaces, and it is. figured that thoTo will not only hef sufficient for all the lighting and power needs of tho 'plant, but also for lighting the town of Tooele and furnishing what power mav bo needed for the. city. Besides the big buildings mentioned Buildings in Progress In tho Now Subdivision. i r . I biiildinjj.vVill be -100 feet long aud 300 ieet wide and the warehouse and shops yvilj be .'WO by 7Z feet and i) inches, ft may .be said that work on all of those structures is being rushed. They are al moving forward together. It is the plan to keep ns many men em-p em-p pyed as possible so that work on all parts of the big plant may be progressing at once. Jt is the intention inten-tion to have the whole plant completed as soon after the first of the vcar as possible. The smelter company 'has entered en-tered into a contract with the Utah Consolidated to begin handling ore frtf the irighland I3qv mine at Bingham Bing-ham o April l. so that the plant must op comnleSr1 before that date. the. Bingham ores are to be brought to tho smelter by means of an aerial .tramway across the mountain's, a distance dis-tance of about four miles. The route for this tramway has been surveyed, and the plans for building it about comp eted.' The .tramway willi be built by tho lirah Consolidated, but the smelter people will build the terminals on its own property. Nnxt Vl-onthJ w?rk-. is f0 be commenced on the big stack. The nature of the1 soil is such that an unusually largo or solid concrete wi I bo built. It is stated that thej railroad i A big area from -which a shoulder of i 5 wake room for the smelter buildings, are working on a foundation, and there j they are erecting sidcwalls and frame work. The Tooele Improvement com-1 com-1 nny, is' s9llin? lots rapidly, and tho Tooele Building association is closing sontractp for buildings. Already -tho Tooele Vallcv railroad, from tho Salt Lake Roulo's depot, through the town und beyond to fhe smelter site, has been completed, and trains aro making connection at the station with all traius on the Salt Lake I Route. Laborers at the smelter site f are conveyed to and from work by i trainB which inako tho trip from the town twice each day, and the fare is j 5 cents a trip. Loads of material are being haulod to tho site. The smelter site is oOO feet above the town, and the tracks make the ascent with a "maximum "maxi-mum grade of 2 A per cent. It is interesting to watch fhe development de-velopment work nt tho town site, but it .is far more interesting to watch developments at tho smelter, where hundreds of men arc at .work on tho giant smelter plant that, when completed, com-pleted, will cover an area of '1300 feet square and that will cost in the neighborhood neigh-borhood of $-1,000,000, for this is the enterprise that makes all the other i developments possible, and that will make of Tooelo a city of from 10,000 j to 15,000 people eventually, it is bc- j, lievcd. ' Tho smeltor sito is situated on a strip of ground most favorably located for the purpose a location selected be-I be-I cause of its natural advantages, ini- I portant among which may bo mentioned ji uic fact that the direction of the wind is universally toward the mountains and from tho valley, so that there will . bo little danger, if any, in tho valley from tho fumes of tho smelter smoke. Tt will bo carried awav from the citv into tho hills. Tho plans for tho plant have all been completed with great care, and if; is to bo first-class in everv respect. Nothing new in the way of smeHcr machinery will be omitted. All of the buildings are to be of steel con-) con-) strucMon, and will be equipped with i electric cranes -for moving heavy ma chinery. : . Tfi"'' "P 0:1 tn0 niountainsidc and larthest from the valley will bo located lo-cated the dust chambers. Of these there will be two, and the plans aro so made that another may be built if there s a demand for it. These dust chambers cham-bers will be 1G0 by '63 feet in dimensions. dimen-sions. To the north of these will be the receiving bins, and below will be the sampling bins and mill, tho blast furnace and tho roasting bins. Then the mountain has boon removed to ' Cattle pass on the Tooele Valley road. Concrete mixing plant is shown. 'construction ol has already been installed, but not, fully equipped. Until flic power house is completed this building, which takes, its power from the Tclluride power line, which passes near the smelter, will be a distributing point for power for the plajis call' for .mammoth buildings for warehouse and shops, boiler and blacksmith shops. 'Ground- has been broken, for the. boiler and. blacksmith shpp and also for the smelter building. coiivcrtei'S and furnaces. . The latter The solid concrete is typical of the the road. lines, including the road from the Jooele station to the smelter 'site and t ip trackage at the plant, will exceed thirteen miles. , Water for the smelter plant has been piped in a 12-inch pipe from -c'vcr-llow-ing springs in Pine eanvon, just be-luml be-luml the smelter. On the ground it is earned to various parts of tho plant by moans of smaller pipes aud work of installing, these, is now going ou. The wnfer system now has a capacity of 1700 gallons peri minute, and,' it is .mild lllIU ".in l.r. 1 I,. .... I.. ...... .1 While everything )S being rushed at the .smelter site there is no less. activity ,in the town. There are numerous new buildings. Perhaps the most conspicuous, conspicu-ous, or al least the one nearest to completion com-pletion just now, is the .11 -room hotel, three stories, which is boi:ir built by the Salt Lake Security & Trust eoni-pany. eoni-pany. It is well along. It is located al the corner of .Date and JJroadwav. Al U'tah and Broadway the Tooele I rading company, an old concern of the city, is preparing f0' build a largo mercantile establishment, 76" ' bv 1.'50 feet, and right opposite will be the two 'modern ;lore buildings of Dr. .J. !:. Phipps. plans for which have been submitted and approved. Work ou these will be started soon. Mrs. Mary Smith of Butte hist week entered into a contract with fhe Tooele Kiiilding association for the erection of a it 1 - room rooming hunse ami theater building, work on which will be started immediately.
