Show C Y M C K Y M K A9 Sanpete Messenger/Sanpete Messenger-Gunnison Valley Edition Wednesday, June 17, 2009 Manti pitcher named 2A softball MVP By Bob Bahlmann Sports writer Alex Hancock Jessica Lindow Kelton Shelly Kunsang Gyurme MANTI—Athletic ability, leadership and unselfishness are the characteristics used to describe the 2009 2A softball Most Valuable Player, Manti’s McKenzie Hatch. Hatch is a big part of the Templars’ state championship season. Her pitching helped the team put 11 shutout victories in the books. At bat, Hatch was a solid hitter who often had opposing outfielders watching the ball clear the fence. Templar softball coach Susan Hatch believes McKenzie’s contributions go beyond her playing abilities. “She’s a great leader,” said coach Hatch. “She’s one of those leaders you want on the field.” Hatch will trade in her Templar red for Badger blue next year as she continues her softball career as a member of the Snow College team. Hatch joins several other Sanpete softball players as members of the 2A all-state teams. Her teammates are as follows: Deseret News first team: McKenzie Hatch, Haley Hatch and Kaitlyn Hatch, all from Manti. Salt Lake Tribune first team: McKenzie Hatch, Haley Hatch and McKenzie Blauer from Manti and Hailey Allred from Gunnison. Deseret News second team: Tauni McFarlane, Manti. Salt Lake Tribune second team: Kaitlyn Hatch and Tauni McFarlane, both from Manti. Deseret News honorable mention team: Chelsea Cox and McKenzie Blauer from Manti and Haley Allred and Stephanie Spencer from Gunnison. 3A all-state softball players named Tyler Clark Mathew Olson Academic all-state athletes selected By Bob Bahlmann Sports writer M I D VA L E — E a c h year, the Utah High School Activities Association recognizes student athletes that have excelled both on the field and in the classroom. Xtreme fighters raise funds to pummel cancer By Bob Bahlmann Sports writer RICHFIELD—When Anthony Monson started Xtreme Combat LLC, his purpose was to promote full-contact fighting in central Utah. That dream has become a reality with monthly fights scheduled for venues throughout the area. One fighter in particular, Corey Loftus from Richfield, has inspired Monson to join in another fight-promotion effort—this one against cancer. Loftus went from a rookie who had never fought to the third-ranked heavyweight in Utah. Shortly after his last fight, in December of 2007, Loftus was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone cancer. The bout against cancer appears to be a unanimous decision with Loftus as the winner. On April 29 he was declared “cancer free.” Monson was so impressed with Loftus’ struggle that in Jan. 2009 he formed Fighters Against Cancer in an effort to raise funding for the battle against cancer. On June 20, 2009, the Xtreme Combat fights, to be held at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield, will be a fundraiser for Relay for Life. All proceeds from the event will be donated for cancer treatment and research. This Saturday’s event will feature three Sanpete County fighters. Dayle Jarvis from Ster- ling and Sean Winn and Lonnie Rogers, both from Gunnison, will be competing. The doors open at 5:30 with the fights beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 801-4406933 or at www.svc.snow.edu. In addition, a mobile relay will have a truck traveling from St. George to Richfield gathering donations for an auction to be held on June 26 at the football field in Richfield.
