Political conventions outlined It is political-party convention time in Sanpete, which means county Democrats and Republicans will be gathering to elect new officers and energize party members. Following are details of each major party’s convention. Democrats—The Sanpete County Democratic Party convention will take place Tuesday, April 17 at 7 p.m. in the banquet room of Don’s Gallery Restaurant in Ephraim. Speakers will be Joyce Spinelli, the regional chair from St. George, and Craig Axford, the Utah Democratic Party’s party organizer and co-chair of the Democratic Progressives. Objectives of the meeting will be to define the Sanpete County Democratic Party’s platforms and goals for the future, and to invite people to consider becoming a delegate to the state organizing convention. Please RSVP to 835-4200. Republicans—The Sanpete County Republican Party convention will be held April 28 at the Sanpete County Courthouse in Manti. The convention itself will begin at 8 p.m., but registration for county delegates will occur from 7-7:45 p.m. Representatives from the staffs of Sen. Robert Bennett, Sen. Orrin Hatch and Rep. Chris Cannon are expected to attend. This year is the party’s organizing convention, so much of the business will be the election of local party officers. STERLING Local artist receives award STERLING—Local artist Kaziah Hancock, founder of Project Compassion, which provides custom portraits of military men and women killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, has received the highest civilian award given by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Hancock received the Gold Medal of Merit at a ceremony March 5 in Washington, D.C. The project’s chairman and executive director, Marie Woolf of California, was awarded the American Legion Auxiliary’s Service Spirit Award on the same day. Project Compassion consists of a group of artists who paint portraits of fallen service members for their next of kin. In four years, the six-artist group has completed 535 portraits. Hancock has just finished her 300th portrait. Her subject was Donald Griffith, a 29Kaziah Hancock year-old sergeant from Mechanicsville, Iowa who was killed in Iraq in 2005. Gov. Jon Huntsman will present Hancock with the Governor’s Mansion Artist Award on Sept. 18 at a dinner with a reception and award ceremony afterwards. EPHRAIM City manager elects to stay put EPHRAIM—Ephraim City Manager Richard Anderson told the city council last week that he had turned down a job offer at nearly three times his city salary and would be remaining with the city. “Money isn’t everything,” Anderson said following the meeting. Earlier in his career, he worked in the aerospace industry in Salt Casino Star Theatre 78 S. Lake City. Some of his former work associates now own a consulting business specializing in cleanup of hazardous explosive materials. The company tried to hire Anderson, whose bachelor’s degree is in environmental science, to direct a big project in San Jose, Calif. Anderson said one reason he turned down the offer was his desire to stay in Sanpete County. He grew up in the county, and has restored and lives in the home in Mt. Pleasant where he grew up. He also said his wife has had health issues recently and it was not a good time to move or to begin commuting to a job out of state. City considers renaming streets EPHRAIM—A committee appointed by Mayor Cliff Birrell to suggest ways of “branding” the city has recommended changing some street names to family names of some of the Scandinavian pioneers who settled the town. Birrell said signs on any renamed streets would still show directional information (such as 100 East or 100 West). The renaming might start with streets around the potential Fort Ephraim heritage plaza. City leaders have discussed creating a plaza on the interior of the block from 100 North to Center Street and from Main Street to 100 East. “We don’t want to get cutesy with it,” Councilwoman Jeanette Anderson said. She suggested possibly restoring some of the 19th century names of streets, or using names of prominent former citizens. Birrell asked council members to think about the idea and about how to involve citizens in choosing streets to be renamed and street names.
