Show REGIS rRATI0N In the desperation their campaign I the republicans are forced to resort to eyerything which can even remotely be made to appear as a democratic injustice in-justice In the good old days of Ben when we had a republican commission in Utah it was considered by the Tribune Tri-bune to be the very quintessence of justice and wisdom The scene changes and our friend Grover is in then the song changes also and the Utah commission becomes at once a monstrous evil because the Utah commission com-mission is not only no longer republican republi-can but it is actually democratic The good old Tribune tears it venerable white hair in its desperation Its groans fill the air and its tears fill the pleasant vales of Zion Now we submit sub-mit that this waste of sentiment wind and tears is puerility itself Indeed have the democrats worked to get hold not only of the commission but the whole machinery of the territorial government gov-ernment as well None know the valu e of that commission in partisan politics poli-tics better than the democrats because be-cause they have had man y hard object lessons from the republicans The modest tearful old Trib knows it well It values it at something like its real weight in votes Hence these tears That together with statehood the opening of the reservations the fair prospects of the return of the escheated church property and the recovery of over a half million of money by the church does make a rather grave situation for the republican party and the Tribune to be sure If the dear old obituary mill can grind out a valid objection to the democratic handling of that body whyso be it and who can blame it But so long as it can only c mplain that the democrats are following follow-ing republican example in the disposition disposi-tion of legitimate advantage by it no heart will break or tear founts be dried up A duty to be performed for the democrats will cone very nearly including in-cluding all the people of Utah this fall BO nearly so that it will be a fellow exceedingly ex-ceedingly hard to please Give them the entire commission or a majority either and vet wojd have votes to npuro itfNovemoer a good many of them tooIn r In this same article of Sunday which we are considering the Tribune cannot can-not resist the poor brag that in the good old days of the republican commission com-mission it was simply and only liberal A good large number of republicans dont yery greatly relish the fact that a large per cent of their associates are liberals anyhow any-how and to be twitted with the fact now that republican commissions I heretofore were only liberal commissions commis-sions will not prove palatable at all It is difficult says the Tribuneto say at this hour which of the two great parties are the stronger We do nut find it difficult at all and with the advantage ad-vantage of an honest force of demo cratic registrars there is no sort of difficulty about arriving at the conclusion conclu-sion that the democratic party is just strong enough to walk off with all insight in-sight this tall Thats no problem at all The difficulty is only in determining determin-ing how great the majority shall be We ao not want to be unreasonable about it but we arrive at the conclusion conclu-sion irrisistably that the democracy is byfar tne stronger and after the sec ond Tuesday Xovembar there will beno comparison at all The dear old Tribs conclusion that the democracy should have asked for no changes that is made none in the commission or the body of registrars is too infinitely in-finitely angelic even for heavenly politics How charming is the old obituary warblerl What heaven on earth we will have when its modes are adopted I When J When the Tribune in advance foreshadows the probable actionjof the democratic registrars the commission and the courts it places itself severely in contempt earns the contempt of all honest men who hate a prejudged decision Because about 75 per cent of the newly naturalized citizens at Manti were of the democratic demo-cratic persuasion the Tribune is gloriously glori-ously drunk with unavailing anger |
