Show I THE COMMISSION ALL RIGHT I The Utah Commission was reformed I by President Cleveland for the purpose of appointing as its members bona fide residents of the territory Previously it had been made up of men who spent but a short time here and very little of their salaries but who used both in the respective localities in the East where their homes and interests were centred Of course the President appointed three Democrats and two Republicans on the board If he had been a Republican I Republi-can he would have selected three Republicans Re-publicans and two Democrats or supposed sup-posed Democrats Either majority I would be in harmony with the provision of the Edmunds act creating the Commission Com-mission For the most part of the time preceding preced-ing this change the majority of the Commission were under the dictation of the paper which is now engaged in libelling that body by imputing to it I Improper motives and predicting its corrupt action The great differences between the Commission then and now are first its composition of bona fide Utonians second its freedom from control con-trol by a coterie represented by a paper That body is proceeding on the rules adopted by its predecessor They were defended and pronounced altogether lovely by the Obituary when the Commission Com-mission could be pulled by its string Now that it has been cut loose nd is I independent eerything about It even I the rules which were so excellent but a short time ago all arc repugnant and vile 1n the sight and scent of that dis gruntled orran of effete Republicanism i I That inconsistent and unstable publication i publi-cation asserts that in the time of COmmissioner 1 Com-missioner Carlton or old man Carlton j Carl-ton as it elegantly calls him and also I i in the time of Commissioner McClern and The Herald said the Tribune was worried because it could not control the I Commission The Oblftiary Is nothing if not inaccurate The Herald said the I Tribune was worried because it could not control Judge Carlton and also because be-cause it could not control General Mc Ciernand But its control of the Commission I Com-mission was undisputed Now it is not in it to the extent of a i toenails edge Hence its wrath I Anger in its case means vituperation and progrostications of evil They are only froth end fury signifying nothing but the boiling over of the Obituary We believe the Utah Commission will i perform its duty according to the best I understanding of the majority of its i I members And our confidence in its integrity is increased by the assurance that it will be entirely free from the vicious and baneful influence that governed gov-erned its predecessor for not even the t Republican members of the present body will draw their inspiration or take I any instructions from persons connected I con-nected with the Salt Lake Tribune |
